The Bar Council of India (BCI) has published the preparation materials and model questions and answers for the new all India bar exam that is proposed to take place on 5 December 2010.

The model question paper consists of 100 multiple-choice questions across 20 subjects and should be completed in three-and-a-half hours.

The preparatory materials consist of two books, with the second book weighing in at 173 pages.

The paper includes a mix of factual and short problem questions, ranging across two categories. Category I consists of seven questions each from the following general subjects: alternative dispute resolution (ADR); the Civil Procedure Code and Limitation Act; constitutional law; contract law, including specific relief, special contracts, and negotiable instruments; criminal law I: the Indian Penal Code; criminal procedure; drafting pleading and conveyancing; evidence; jurisprudence; professional ethics and the professional code of conduct for advocates and property law.

Category II consists of 23 questions across the following specialist subjects, covering at least five different areas: administrative law; company law; environmental law; family law; human rights law; labour and industrial law; law of tort, including motor vehicle accidents, and consumer protection law; principles of taxation law; and public international law.

The pass mark is 40 correct questions out of 100, with candidates having to score at least 31 marks in the first section and nine marks in the second section, according to the BCI’s bar exam frequently asked questions (FAQs).
