Vidhii to open in Kolkata with new partner from legacy firm

Exclusive: Vidhii Partners has continued on its expansion drive and is set to start up a Kolkata office in May with the hire of Paras Kuhad Associates senior associate Deepti Mohan as a partner.

Co-founding partner Manish Desai said that Vidhii would open in Kolkata by May, having already decided on office space, which would be finalised within 15 days:

He said that the new office would replicate the transactional and disputes practice area split of Vidhii in other locations.

ILS Pune graduate Mohan had started her career at Paras Kuhad’s Mumbai office in 2004 and shifted to the firm’s Kolkata office in 2009 for personal reasons. She most recently specialised in corporate work.

She said: “We’ll set up a small place for a couple of people – for about two or three advocates - and let’s see from there.

“It would be a mixed practice area [of corporate and litigation] because obviously we would have the support from the Bombay office as well.”

When asked about the prospects of Kolkata, she replied: “Kolkata doesn’t have the kind of industry as Bombay but I think that’s where the challenge lies also. We will start with smaller transactions and can obviously build it up from there.”

Paras Kuhad Associates managing partner Paras Kuhad confirmed Mohan’s departure.

In December of last year the firm opened a media law practice in Mumbai’s Bandra district and in December 2009 it merged with a Bangalore firm several months after spinning off out of Paras Kuhad Associates.

do these guys just send you 'press releases' and you just print them?

[Not that it should really matter, but no, we keep in touch and speak with them every now and then and they tell us what they have been up to... -Kian]

Deepti is a gem. All of them at Vidhii at a point belonged to the fantastic team under able leadership of Mr. Kuhad and Mr. Desai at Mumbai. The team was so talented that they could take on the whole world and still be always pleasant and good...

infact those who know paras kuhad and manish desai know that they are very nice persons who parted ways on debacle over hemant sahai merger. The spin off has done little good to either.

Vidhii will always be successful, cos they follow the right philosophy of team credit and never personal credit! Manish Desai has understood that the power of the wolf really lies with the pack and vice versa! Kuddos Mr. Desai....

Couldnt agree more. Chennai, Pune and Kolkata were never required. It is good that Chennai and Pune have been closed. PKA will certainly do well with a slim team. Mumbai office is doing very well under Mr. Lamba who is very competent through very young.

Kian, you are wrong . There are few, who have joined other law firms (excluding the two that you are referring) are actually adding fuel to this .Both the firms should be careful so that the professional relationship are not disturbed.

infact the best would be to patch up and try to see if a reunification is possible. Till then neither will be willing to have the respective heroes go un-defended...
