Legal diversity NGO Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access’ (IDIA) Mumbai chapter organised the second season of the IDIA Football League (IFL) on 5 and 6 September at Kamla Mills Ground in Lower Parel, Mumbai. Star TV’s legal team bested Trilegal to win the tournament.

Star scored three goals during the final match - all in the penalty shoot out - beating Trilegal’s one penalty shoot out goal. Trilegal Mumbai associate Anshil Gosavi was the goal scorer. For Star the goal scrorers were Saikat Sengupta, Apurv Gupta and Suvesh Subramanyam.

IFL 2015’s participants were 20 law firms and in house legal teams: Star TV and Mahindra & Mahindra, AZB & Partners, J Sagar Associates, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Fortitude law Associates, Economic Law Practices, Lakshmikumaran Sridharan, Juris Corp, Khaitan & Co., Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Bharucha and Partners, Desai Diwanji, Wadia Ghandy, Platinum, K Law, Vahura and Trilegal.

The entry fee from the participants will be used by IDIA for funding the education of its scholars - underprivileged school students who want to study undergraduate law courses.

On-the-ground

The teams were divided into four groups of five teams each. The 40 IFL matches this season included four matches per day, per team. Day one saw league matches based on the results of which teams were segregated into the ‘Cup’ and ‘Plate’ categories for the knockout matches. The top two teams in each group moved to the Cup championships and the bottom three moved to the Plate championships. Of the 8 teams that competed for the cup in the quarterfinals, the losers also moved down to the Plate championships.

IDIA commented in an email: “The final was a twenty minute match, a exciting and close match with both teams on their toes despite a very hectic two days of continous games. There were many chances for both team but unfortunately it was still a 0-0 at the end of regulation time. The game moved on to a penalty shoot outs. Each team had three penalties. Star TV’s goalkeeper (Srinivasan Saimani) won the match for them with his superb save by putting his face on the line of the ball to take the Cup. The final scores were 3-1 in favour of Star TV.”

Other best men

Khaitan & Co. won the ‘Plate Winners Trophy’ defeating Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas in the finals.

Srinivasan Saimani (Star TV) was adjudged the ‘Best Goalkeeper of IFL 2015’ and Animesh Bisht (Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas) was awarded the ‘Highest Scorer IFL 2015’ award.

The Fair Play Trophy was bagged by Fortitude Law Associates.

As it is said- “work hard, party harder”, the event ended with an after-party “IFL Night” in which all the participants and IDIA members, leaders enjoyed to the full and winners were felicitated with loud cheers. The after-party was graced by the presence of Mr. Pramod Rao, Mrs. Sweta Rao, Mr. Murli Neelakantan and Mr. Ritvik Lukose, to name a few of the renowned names in the legal fraternity. Listening to experiences of IDIA scholars in the party further inspired the cause behind the IDIA Football League.

The headline of the article should have been moderated. You don't report the outcome of a final match by saying that the winner kicked the opponent's ass. In any event, the final was lost in the penalty shoot-outs. Reporting on sports should be coupled with display of some sportsman spirit. Not on legallyindia.

Did prachi get rejected in a job application to Trilegal? The heading is so factually inaccurate - consider that it was nil-nil in full time, and we lost in penalties. Furthermore, even if it was factually accurate that we 'got our asses kicked' the language is unbecoming of an unbiased 'journalist'. So this article (coupled with all the previous Trilegal bashing which Legally India never misses a chance at) only begs the question of what harm Trilegal must have caused to Prachi personally (rejection for job app), or Kian or to Legally India. Perhaps you guys should answer to these queries of mine FOR ONCE. not that its relevant, but yes I do work at Trilegal.

Hi,

Thank you for your comment.

I am not sure who is commenting but in my interactions with Trilegal management, I got the feeling that they can take a little light-hearted joke which is too trivial to harm any reputations.

Best wishes,
Prachi

So you were trying to be funny? That explains.. nothing. What is funny is how the quote in your article speaks of a close match and yet your headline calls it an ass-kicking. Learn a thing or two about football please. And maybe about responsible reporting as well.

Why don't you list out all the asses that Trilegal kicked on its way to the final. That would be more funny, no?

Are only comments moderated? and not the report titles on legallyindia?

1. Expect a much better dignified reporting.

2. EIther that, or the writer clearly doesnt understand football. A penalty shootout victory can hardly be called "kicking ass". I would suggest the writer to know something about football before writing headlines like she would talk to her 13 year old friends.

I agree it is maybe not the most nuanced headline. But this is also not espnfc.com.

Wow, Trilegal are really sore losers... You got your ass kicked in penalty shootouts, roll over and take it and stop crying, it's not like it's anything important, it's just a stupid 5-a-side football game.

Yes LI, we think you should change the headline. Seems a little unprofessional on your part... If the votes go up on this, you should go by popular demand.
kianganz 9 Sept 2015, 09:51
+1 -16
If we ran things by popular demand you wouldn't read half the stories we do.

In my mind, sure, the headline may be a little hyperbolic and a little tongue in cheek, but it's only a football game and hardly serious sports coverage...

Is anyone seriously offended that their professional or other skills are being called into question by a headline?
Eh 9 Sept 2015, 11:11

Not from trilegal but just a poor headline that stands out as an oddity. Also, popular demand aside, user feedback is often equally useful for any digital venture.

Kian, many things in life are not 'serious business'. Moot courts for example. But that does not mean that the people involved didn't put their heart into what you seem to dismiss as a trivial venture. Would you allow such shoddy and derogatory reporting on a team that's lost the finals of a moot? I'm all for standing by your employee, but there's a time and place for that. Here it just seems petulance on both your parts in refusing to accept you goofed up.

Though I believe that Trilegal deserves a kick in its ass at every given opportunity, the headline was a tad bit unprofessional . . . . Just a tad bit.

I absolutely think that Legally India should learn how to do some sensible reporting. Firstly, Trilegal reached the finals after playing well and beating many teams in the league stage. Trilegal won the Runners-Up for the Cup after beating 18 other teams to that. Secondly ''kicking ass' means the win was substantial. Sorry but that wasn't so. It was 0-0 at the end of regulation time so it was a very close match. Penalties in 6-a-side tournament has a lot to do with luck, and not necessarily skill. It's nice to crack a wise one, but LI does not have the skills or the ability to crack a wise one the right way. LI likes to sensationalise news, thats nice coz your readership goes up, its like Arnab Goswami's TRPs are probably higher than a lot of other channels. But then who do we have competing with a LI. 'LI should read their own comment within the comment section. just typing it in so that sense prevails on the editorial staff "We and fellow readers love when you share your thoughts in a comment - but please be nice to other readers and humans who likely have feelings and don't defame..."
Shamson 9 Sept 2015, 09:50

Why is this article inordinately biased against Trilegal? what did it do to LI and these two 'authors'? Trilegal lost in a penalty shoot out you dimwits (how that is an ass kicking god alone knows). But then again, you lazy bunch probably only used your limbs and digits for using your phones and laptops (for the purpose of criticizing others) instead of doing any physical/ extracurricular activity or sport yourselves.

In this context, I guess your ignorance is the cause of such a dumb headline. But please, don't try to hide your bias against Trilegal as 'a joke'. Lawyers may be stupid, but even the dumbest lawyers can see through that charade.. Its easier to just come clean and accept that Trilegal is hated simply because of what the Founders (of course with the assistance of its bonded laborers) have achieved in 15 years!

I don't think anyone can question a headline of a news story where the reporting has been accurate. Each journalist have their own style of reporting and it is best left to them how to put it forth to the public.

The headline in clearly in bad taste! We all know that Legally India is no Economic and Political Weekly, but then you needn't necessarily become Mail Today. Btw, I have no connection with Trilegal but from the comments it becomes clear the victory didn't involve any "ass-kicking". Please admit for once that you were wrong. And Prachi, why stop at ass-kicking? An even more "fun" headline would be "Trilegal gets fu**** by Star in the a**"! If sensationalism is the goal, why stop halfway?!

Ya man.. I don't understand the Trilegal hate.. it was a 0-0 scoreline.. Im not from trilegal and certainly dont have any love for trilegal since they rejected me on campus.. but if you were trying to make some kind of joke, at least make it an intelligent joke on what actually happened..

You equate 'negotiations' with a friendly and fun football game played for charity where an in-house team beat a law firm?

I was wondering why people were taking it so seriously...

Kian, you are a veteran in the field and know very well that the written word carries the author's emotions only when it is sculpted beautifully. In this case, the article is not so crafted and fails to create any "excitement" (for the lack of a better work) in the reader. In the circumstances, it would have been saner to stick to a more conservative headline. I would have laughed with you had the article been a witty or a funny piece, but that's clearly not the case.
Just another observer 9 Sept 2015, 13:56

Kian, not sure if you have been following the football scene in the Bombay legal circuit or sports at all. It is played pretty seriously and each team puts in a lot of effort leading up to each tournament. People are passionate about it. Most of us are good friends off the pitch but when the whistle blows, we do not concede an inch on the pitch. And that's what makes these tournaments events to look forward to. So nobody likes it when they have played a hard game of football and narrowly lost out and read that asses were kicked, when that's definitely not how it was.

As Bill Shankly had once famously said "Some people think football is a matter of life and death.....I can assure them it is much more serious than that." - just to give you a perspective on maybe why people are taking it seriously :)

P.S. Not from Trilegal and definitely not a Liverpool supporter!!

Fair enough, didn't realise it was taken so seriously...

For what it's worth, no offence was intended with the headline and I regret if any was caused.
