Shardul Amarchand scoops AZB's Debashree Dutta as Mumbai banking partner

AZB & Partners senior associate Debashree Dutta will join Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas’ (SAM) Mumbai office as a partner, focusing on banking, Legally India has reliably learned.

Dutta began her career at ICICI Bank’s in-house team in 2007 after graduating from ILS Pune. She completed an MSc in law and finance from Oxford University’s Said Business School in 2010, after which she joined AZB’s finance teams.

SAM Mumbai managing partner Akshay Chudasama was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press.

We have reached out to AZB and Dutta for comment. UPDATE: AZB’s Zia Mody commented in an email: “We wish Debashree all the very best. We were very happy to have her with us. We are sure she will shine in her new role.”

Chudasama, who was a senior partner at J Sagar Associates (JSA) and a partner at AZB before joining SAM, had landed a coup in poaching AZB corporate partner Shuva Mandal late last year.

SAM’s Mumbai office was around 80 lawyers strong last month, with space enough to expand to 140 in its more than Rs 50 lakh rent Nariman Point office space.

Is it that difficult to figure. Sapan is an equity partner. She is a salaried partner. Sapan is national practice head of banking. She is a junior partner. Can you now see what happens to sapan.

One of the most nicest and soft spoken person to work with!

Very smart and hard working! many of you would know that she is her batch topper and her notes are still used by student of ILS! A very famous name in the student fraternity must say!

Could you do a basic grammar check before posting your comment? Just a few to start you off here -

'most nicest'
'one of the...person'
'student'

I suppose capital first letters would be indeed too much to hope for.

What surprises me is you sound like you have worked with her, so you are either a law student who has interened or a lawyer who cannot be bothered with drafting basic sentences correctly.

Why one must use capitals where appropriate.

"She helped her uncle Jack off the horse" v. "she helped her uncle jack off the horse".

Kian check if there is a non poach between AZB CAM and Khaitan
SAM seems to be benefitting from that?
Also SAM CAM non poach? May expire in May and maybe we will see later hires? SAM needs cap markets in mumbai.

It would be interesting to watch the growth of SAM. They poached a 2007 graduate, who was away for a year for studies, and would have 8 years of work experience. While that's sufficient for many, there would be existing SAM lawyers who would have more experience but have not been made partner.

It's possible that to augment new office, SAM is going all out to recruit while ignoring existing lawyers - both in terms of pay and position.

It's also possible that soon we see a reverse drain from SAM, when it's existing lawyers - who have been loyal for years start leaving.

And once these new hires realise the colour of grass from this side of fence, they may also leave.

Mother's money may help in poaching stars. But building a a team and retaining it, takes a lot more than money.

2015 minus 2007 = 8 years. Less one year makes it 7 years. Not surprised you're connected to law!

Isn't this year 2016 and not 2015. I know it takes time but it's already February "bro". And let's not get into month of graduation and time between jobs and studies. it's just a PQE calculation for us trolls. Those in charge of her background check would have crunched the numbers "bro". I would be surprised if "you" are connected to law. I am just a humble headhunter who visits LI to keep myself updated with gossip which could be good for business.

Do people graduate in February Headhunter man? She is likely to have graduated sometime mid 2007 no? Which makes it even less than 7 years.

One got the money and some talent.
The other got his own money, amount of talent, market standing, repute AND most importantly a strong set of VALUES.

It is only a matter of time before the scales tilt in favour of he who moves forward with values intact rather than waving wads of cash!

Why was my comment not published Kian ? Are only 'super nice' comments allowed? It's an open secret that everyone at SAM banking team is disappointed with this new hire and surely an explanation for that phenomenon can and should be allowed to be published

Stop this rumour mongering. I work closely with the SAM banking team and they seem happy at the prospect of an additional person to lend a hand. Also SAM Mumbai office operates on pure merit which Deb brings with her and ability to preform her wor well. Can you Mr. CAMer claim the same? Thought not!
@Mr Camer 16 Feb 2016, 10:19

who constitutes the SAM Banking team??

if the team was so disappointed then shouldnt have hired a candidate like that.

if she is still being hired after all disappointments - then the people who are so disappointed are either irrelevant in the system or has no say in the system!
