S&R elects 2 Law School batchmates to partner: Jabarati Chandra, Rachael Israel

S&R Associates has elected two corporate associates, Jabarati Chandra (pictured left) and Rachael Israel (pictured right), to its partnership.

According to the firm’s press release:

Jabarati Chandra’s corporate practice focuses on capital markets, mergers and acquisitions, foreign investment and general corporate matters. She joined S&R in 2006 after receiving a BA , LLB (Hons.) from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. Jabarati is based in the Firm’s Mumbai office.

Rachael Israel’s corporate practice covers mergers and acquisitions, private equity, capital markets and general corporate matters. She joined S&R in 2006 after receiving a BA , LLB (Hons.) from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. In 2012, she was a visiting foreign lawyer at Slaughter and May in London. Rachael is based in the Firm’s New Delhi office.

S&R promoted Lynn Pereira and Vivek Kumar to counsel last week.

That sounds nice. What is the point of an all equity partnership though if the lockstep is a 20 year one? Kian, any idea what the equity structure is, other than simply "all equity" which only tells part of the story?

Well done to the firm for being one of the few in the market to offer equity, despite having promoters.

There are no such intermediate designations at S&R - you are either (1) an associate; (2) an equity partner; or (3) a counsel.

Why not Google a few global law firm naming conventions before asking such daft questions? Can't speak for S&R specifically, but 'Counsel', as commonly understood, is a career track which runs as an alternative to partnership.

Jabarati's promotion was a foregone conclusion. I believe she has been unofficial second in command in Bombay for a while now.

A bit too young to be equity partners - another effect of the Amarchand split? Sandip,Rajat, Bhakta are all in Bombay so this will be second rung not second in command.

You don't have to be first rung to be second in command. Its a different and much older Amarchand effect at play.

These promotions are probably the best comeback to that jerkish comment on LI, in the last S&R update...The one in which the commenter expressed disappointment over various management practices at this firm!

Ignore what they are called, I meant the rung before partner. And if you are not earning this much at that level, do yourself a favour and start looking. TTA is tough to get in to, but CAM and SAM should be hiring and open for negotiation.

Kian, its a little disappointing to see that you refer to NLS as Law School, a nomenclature which its students use which is a sort of exclusionary pratice. LI should stay above all this and mention the college by its name. Believe it or not, non NLS grads also went to law schools.

I think the furore is rather silly. Whether you use caps or not, it is true that they are law school batchmates. No point overthinking it. Besides, it is a matter of fact that there is only one college with Law School in the name. I've never understood why grads from other law colleges or law universities get so hot under the collar for this. I mean, is it really about wanting to be acknowledged as being from A law school or THE law school?

About 90% of us only still do it because it gets such an uppity reaction from the nalsar folks. They should really start calling themselves the academy. That'll show us.

For those that didn't know, the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University Act, 1998 was amended in 2005 (see section 3(1)) to drop the full form of NALSAR. So basically today, it's Nalsar University of Law.

Refer to us as you please, Kian. The fact of the matter is that people from Nalsar don't go about, living their post law school life, mooching on the Law School brand - they have likely moved on to greater things and passing out of a great law school is no longer the most singular achievement of their lives.
