Exclusive: A former Platinum Partners associate and an ex-SEBI and in-house bank lawyer have started a new Mumbai law firm specialising in capital markets and securities law called Prism Partners Advocates.

Ex-SBI Capital Markets chief of compliance and legal PR Ramesh and Platinum Mumbai senior associate Yogesh Chande set up Prism last month as co-partners.

They are yet to fill their junior ranks of fee-earners albeit having taken on 800 square feet of office space in Nariman Point’s Mittal Tower.

Ramesh told Legally India: “We believe there’s a big gap in specialist capital markets advisory and also typically all the M&A transaction-based advisory work.”

Chande said that Prism would focus primarily on securities laws and capital markets, the commodities market and projects finance too.

Ramesh added that the firm would look to be “everywhere” in the capital markets space, including acting on initial public offerings (IPOs), qualified institutional placements (QIPs), as well as doing some advisory and corporate M&A work.

Chande was a senior associate in Platinum’s securities law practice from December 2008, before which he worked at Centrum Capital, Ambit Corporate Finance and ICICI Securities.

Between 2001 and 2003 Chande was a senior executive officer at the National Stock Exchange (NSE).

Until 2005 Ramesh was at the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) where he had held positions as chief of the corporate finance division, chief of the chairman’s office and chief of the international division.

In 2005 he joined SBI Capital Markets where he was chief of compliance and legal.

Both are qualified lawyers and company secretaries.

Platinum will find it difficult to retain talent because of their policy of putting in mimimum of 10 yrs+ to make a partner. Even associates of 5-7 yrs yrs are not designated senior associates. Clearly its difficult to have such a stringent career-path for the associates when the career-path of better firms are much smaller. But anyways, all the best to Prism--great move.

Some other new firms have a similar track record to partnership and no associate designations. Not totally opposed to the no designation policy. I think some Indian law firms over-do it with a change in designation every 2 years or so but it is important for partners to have periodic reviews for associates and communicate on a regular basis to associates on their performances (or the lack of it) and also on their role in the firm and the track towards partnership.

Congratulations to Prism Advocates! The legal industry needs more of such specialist law firms as many of the large law firms do not really have a road map for specialist practice though claim loudly to have ones. Yeah, some one mentioned correctly regarding attrition. Though of late law firms have brought together HR team, yet at the partner level there is little focus to grooming the next line of guard leading to many bright associates feeling lost. While discussing all this one cannot also fail to mention about favouritism that leads to people feeling unwanted in some firms.
