Platinum expands partnership to 5 from Mumbai

Exclusive: Platinum Partners has promoted Mumbai senior associate Yashasvi Mohanram to its partnership, who joined the firm last year from White & Case Singapore.

Platinum co-founding partner Karam Daulet-Singh said: “When Yash came on board in September I was quite confident that he was partner level [and] he has proved himself very rapidly.”

Mohanram added: “It’s been very busy and very good in the eight months since I’ve been back here.”

According to Daulet-Singh, Mohanram had worked on two over $100m private equity transaction and one large chemical sector strategic acquisition since starting at the firm, although deal details were confidential.

Mohanram’s promotion will take effect from 1 April and will increase the size of Platinum’s partnership to five, of whom two are in Delhi.

With 17 associates, Daulet-Singh said that the firm followed a “fairly conservative” leverage ratio between partners and associates. “Whilst there probably is room for some more leverage in the existing partner set up we want to be conservative by and large.”

He added that the firm had also been working hard on building a competition law merger control practice he would head in Delhi, with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) having the power to veto mergers and acquisitions from 1 June.

Platinum seems to be focusing more on lateral partner hires rather than promoting existing senior associates as partners, first gautam bhat and now mohanram, this could lead to dissatisfaction amongst the existing SAs.

@2. Law firms are businesses and are doing what is done world over, i.e. promoting those that are then considered important for the business. These are not bureaucracies where promotion happens according to the batch of recruitment of the person (or the graduating year from Law School)!

Get over the colonial bureaucratic hangover...

@ 3. If this is how law firms world over(such as Freshfields)run i dont c why the comment warranted a reference to "colonial bureaucratic hangover"...Why do u have to try so hard and justify it on a public forum...the point was the effect of such decisions on the morale of lawyers who stick on with firms in the formative years and are then overlooked. A ex-platinum associate who joined [...] may be a case in point.

@2 and 3

"Acknowledging that the firm had aggressively hired lateral partners in previous years, Jhunjhunwala commented: “Of course we have grown through our lateral hires both in Bombay and Delhi but it’s an important part that we recognise the internal talent also. If you see the number of partners that we have today in Bombay, almost half are internal promotions.

“It is a healthy mix of both internal and external growth.”"
