NLSIU Bangalore’s global legal diaspora has scored another partnership at an elite international law firm, with 2002 graduate Manas Chandrashekar getting the nod in Latham & Watkins’ Hong Kong office.
He specialises in finance and has spent the majority of his career abroad. After graduation from Bangalore, he completed a 2002-2003 LLM from Cornell Law School, followed by three years at Lovells (as Hogan Lovells was-then called) and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in London from 2008 until 2015.
In 2011, he was on a seven month secondment in AZB & Partners, Mumbai.
In 2015, he joined White & Case, and moved to Lathams in 2016 as a counsel.
According to Latham’s press release dated 4 March, announcing a total of 22 global promotions:
Manas Chandrashekar is a member of the Banking Practice in the Finance Department who represents Asian and international private equity sponsors, financial institutions, and non-bank lenders on a range of complex cross-border financings across Asia, with a primary focus on acquisition and leveraged finance. He received his BA LLB from the National Law School of India University in 2002 and his LLM from Cornell Law School in 2003.
2017-18 global ‘India’ promotions
This year has seen Nalsar 2008 alumnus Manish Aggarwal get partnership at global litigation firm Three Crowns in London.
And over the last two years, there have been at least nine other partnership promotions of Indian law graduates globally.
NLS made up the bulk, which is not surprising considering that a sizeable corpus of ‘Law School’ alums who are working abroad, have now come of age.
That balance is likely to even out slightly (old boys’ and girls’ networks notwithstanding), as Nalsar Hyderabad and NUJS Kolkata graduates, who have been ingested by foreign law firm graduate recruitment programmes over the years, reach partnership-level PQEs (post-qualification experience).
Here’s the list:
- NUJS’ Aditya Khanna at Ropes & Gray London,
- NUJS Kolkata 2006 graduate Abhishek Kolay made partner at Kirkland & Ellis in New York,
- Mysore University 2002 grad Karun Cariappa at Morgan Lewis Stamford in Singapore,
- NLS’ Sushil Jacob at Linklaters London,
- NLS’ Nallini Puri at Cleary Gottlieb London,
- NLS’ Ramya Tiller at Debevoise New York,
- NLS’ Kanyaka Ramamurthi at Linklaters,
- NLS’ Sinjini Saha at Cadwalader London
- Delhi University 2004 graduate Amit Kataria at Morrison Foerster in Hong Kong

The article quite clearly states that we're just listing all Indian grads who have made partnership in the last 2 years.
It is obvious that there are more NLSites, just by virtue of them having been around longer, but NUJS has been beginning to make a mark also last year, and I'm sure in a few years it'll become yet more even.
No disparagement of any law school has been intended :)
Aprajita should be added to the above list.
