Majmudar & Co has hired former ING in-houser, Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) law officer and Ministry of Corporate Affairs-officer Abdul Rasheed as an associate partner in Bangalore, as well as taking on a principal in the Mumbai tax group.

Rasheed had worked at financial institution ING in India for almost three years as associate vice president in the corporate legal and compliance department. He had qualified as a lawyer in 1992 in Kerala, followed by a career that also included time at two law firms, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Economic Offences Wing and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) as an officer in the Indian Corporate Law Service (ICLS).

Majmudar partner and the Bangalore office’s 2006 founder Raja Sujith said that Rasheed would focus on corporate, commercial and banking work, although he also had litigation experience to draw on.

Rasheed’s hire takes the size of the four-year-old Bangalore office of the firm to 12 lawyers, which now includes two partners.

Sujith said that in 2009 growth had been relatively slow but 2010 had already seen a lot of interesting matters come in. “Therefore our plans for increasing numbers to at least 20 by this year are possible.”

“The other important thing, especially in Bangalore, is that here we had an opportunity to work with a lot of interesting start ups from the beginning. Some of them had two, three rounds of investments - they are growing with us and we are growing with them,” he added.

Meanwhile Ravishankar Raghavan joined the Mumbai office as a principal in tax, having previously worked with the tax practices of Ernst & Young (E&Y) and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) with 17 years of professional experience.

The firm’s Mumbai office now consists of 40 lawyers, including five partners, said Sujith.
