Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan (LKS) opened its first international office on Friday. Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan SARL – the Geneva-based consultancy branch of LKS - will service India and other developing countries in WTO disputes.

LKS Delhi joint partner and NLU Jodhpur 2006-graduate Atul Sharma and principal associate and 2009 NLU Jodhpur-graduate Adarsh Ramanujan have relocated to Geneva and will run the consultancy firm. The office is in Les Nations on Avenue Giuseppe Motta.

Delhi senior partner S Seetharaman said: “Lakshmikumaran & Sridharan has done more than a few WTO disputes in the past. We would like to do more. The basic idea is to [service] developing countries in WTO disputes and give consultancy to developing countries on various issues like capacity building, or a review of their legal system and whether it is line with WTO commitments or not.”

In addition to focusing on WTO disputes, public international laws and laws of the World Customs Organization (WCO), the office is also aims to provide legal services relating to European trade remedy laws - antidumping, subsidies and safeguards. European clients can also get advice from the Geneva office on Indian corporate, intellectual property and taxation laws but the office is not authorised to make legal representation before local courts in Switzerland, the firm explained in an email.

“We are also handling one major case for the government of India in the US. DS436 - the subsidy case initiated by us against countervailing duties enforced by the US government on India’s exports. We are now representing the government of India but we are not going to restrict ourselves to the government of India,” added Seetharaman.

Seetharaman said that LKS was probably the first Asian law firm to handle WTO cases in Geneva.

This year the firm added its ninth regional office, in Chandigarh and made up seven non-founding partners into equity for the first time ever.

Great news! Hope Indian firms continue to expand globally. We should make sure any of these foreigners are not allowed in. It should be a one-way street. Our way or the highway! I am sure my brothers and sisters at AMSS, Luthra, AZB (the Equity partners) to stand by me in this war. This is the only way in which we will continue to get cheap labour in our firms. Mwahahaha!

This is a very ambitious and bold move. Unlike other firms where offices are opened purely to accomodate a lawyer who is relocating for personal reasonsl this seems to be art of a well thought out expansion strategy. Its great to see firms thinking out of the hat, and thinking ahead of the curve.

Anything you will say, and try to sound profound, no? Most firms have some plan - sound or bland - when opening in new geographies, domestic or international. Fixed costs are much higher in most cases compared to the requirement of trying to retain a relocating attorney.

ok, not being a critique, but a 2009 pass out is already a PA..is every one promoted to PA level that soon or is this guy a super genius?

You can't be a 'critique' - critique is a detailed analysis / appraisal / evaluation or assessment of something. You can, however, be a 'critic' (with not the best grasp on English).

@abc: You'll realize you made a "boo hoo" when you start recognizing the difference between "passing out" and "graduating". I would completely understand though if the language in which you conduct business is not English.

Believe it or not. LKS has a non-lawyer (an engineer) in the IP division who graduated in 2010 as PA. As for Adarsh (he was directly promoted to PA from Associate within 1.5 years), he is definitely a genius and now is a Director of LKS (his LinkedIn Profile). FYI: LKS promotes PAs to Joint Directors/ Joint Partners; then to Partner/ Joint Partner.

Hey That engineer also happens to be an ISB graduate. And whats so incredible about non-lawyers being PA's? They can work with intellectual Property stuff way better than plain-Jane lawyers.

Great news I say. Also, did not know that they have an office in Chandigarh. Good luck to the people who have relocated. Wish they could share their experience of relocating to a country so far away on this platform.

Haha. It's quite telling that even such a non-controversial piece of (good) news has people trying to draw all sorts of inferences and take swipes at others. Is it something to do about the LI anonymous platform that's available or is it just our profession...or perhaps a bit of both?! :)
