Krishnamurthy starts in Delhi, shifts gear in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai

Krishnamurthy and Co, which is branded as K Law, has opened up a new Delhi office and moved into a larger Mumbai office, as well as setting up an expansion path in Chennai and commencing construction on a larger Bangalore office.

Krishnamurthy and Co has taken space in Delhi’s Defence Colony area for its new office, which is headed by senior associate Abhishek Seth who was hired by the firm from E&Y. Two Krishnamurthy and Co Bangalore associates also shifted to Delhi for personal reasons and are now working in the new office.

Krishnamurthy and Co has also moved into a larger Mumbai office in Nariman Point’s Free Press Journal building with 2,500 square feet of space for between 35 to 40 people.

The firm’s founding partner Naina Krishna Murthy, who set up the Mumbai office only around one-and-a-half years ago, said that Mumbai was currently around 20 lawyers strong and was catching up fast with the original head office in Bangalore of around 35 lawyers.

“I’ve told every office you’ve got to compete with each other, that’s the only way to have incentive to keep growing and not get complacent,” she said. “I told Abhishek [Seth in Delhi], when I went to Bombay and had to do the whole thing again that I did in Bangalore, I want the Delhi office to be the same. And he was excited about it and said, yes I like to be challenged.”

Naina Krishna Murthy started up Krishnamurthy and Co in Bangalore in 1999, which now consists of a total of around 60 lawyers including three partners.

Bangalore-based partner Nikhil Krishnamurthy said that in around six to eight months the firm would move into a new head office in Bangalore’s Central Business District near MG Road. “It is presently being constructed and once that’s in place we should have space for around 80 to 90 lawyers,” he said.

In Chennai meanwhile, said Naina Krishna Murthy, the she was looking to turn the office from a “back-office” to which not much time had been devoted to date into a full-service practice and its own profit centre. “Now we are growing it very, very aggressively. We have already had one [litigation] person who has joined this week and we are hoping to hire a good corporate lawyer in the coming weeks and an IP attorney.”

“There is a certain challenge in doing business in Chennai,” she admitted, noting that many firms had entered Chennai with only limited success. “But I’m quite confident that we can do it.”

Naina Krishna Murthy said that while the firm started with just a corporate commercial practice, she was now hoping to mirror the four vertical also including intellectual property, real estate and litigation in all offices, as well as promote additional partners by next year.

35 lawyers in Bangalore !! 25 lawyers in Mumbai !! That's a fairly big national firm... but suprisingly, hardly known !!!

The Firm has only about 12-15 lawyers in Bangalore ....LI should check the facts !

The firm says it has recruited very heavily in the past year in Bangalore and Mumbai so your figures may be out of date.

"Naina Krishna Murthy started up Krishnamurthy and Co in Bangalore in 1999, which now consists of a total of around 60 lawyers including three partners."
57 associates to 3 partners???? Thats a skewed ratio, dude. I would tend to believe #5's comment.

I completely agree with Kian. Krishnamurthy is good place to start. I dont know about the strength of the firm but they have hired good people from the legal faternity in past some time. All the best.

@#5,#7...I second Kian on the fact that KLaw has recruited heavily in the recent past. I was an intern with the firm just a couple of months ago and trust me when I say that the firm is expanding in a big way. I was there for a month and in between that span many new recruits joined...senior associates from AZB, Lovells Lee & Lee, Singapore, Paras Kuhad (the last one is a NUJS Grad). Associates from JSagar;LakshmiKumaran,Crawford Bayley...fresher recruits from Symbiosis (2); ILS (2); NLU,Jodhpur (1) and HNLU, Raipur (1). All this barring one for the Bangalore office. Mumbai has recruited close to 10 during the same period. As per the latest information, the firm has hired close to 10 new recruits over the last month. Also #5, please get your facts correct. KLaw Bangalore office has or should I say had 30+ staff strenght including 3 partners(excluding Naina)till May end.

dey pay 20k to freshers

What #9 is saying may possibly be true, but his comments sounds quite well informed (and defensive) to come from an intern. Or was he the only intern at the period mentioned by him and his recruitment chances get better with the comment.

I have heard a lot about Abhishek Seth. He is a dynamic person who loves challenges. The firm will do well i guess. Is it true that Abhishek Seth also worked with Titus & Co.????

@ #10: Yes, they do have substantial work. KLaw is primarily a South-Indian firm with a sizable share in the industry there. They have a good IPR, Commercial/corporate transactional, litigation practice and property related matters. They have a good client base with even Fortune500 companies on the list(we must not forget that Bangalore is also a commercial hub). Both Nikhil and Naina Krishnamurthy (brother-sister duo) are NLSIU grads from the mid and late 90s batch and are well connected to pull and retain clients. Nikhil heads the IPR team and was earlier working with Anand & Anand. The Firm even finds a mention on www.Legal500.com. Forget about KLaw, I wonder how many have ever tried to venture beyond Mumbai and Delhi firms?

@ #14: One needn't be spying around the firm to identify the new faces. C'mon yaar...its a two storied office and everyone knows everyone. As I said, the recruits joined while I was there and I've worked with some of them. KLaw takes interns regularly. There were two more interns with me and that too from better known institutions. But that doesn't essentially mean that everyone would participate in a discussion on legallyindia...LOL!!

And how on earth do you think that by making anonymous comments on a public forum would land me a job...that sounds dumb?..don't you think so?

@#15: As I said the firm has a sound IP practice with Nikhil Krishnamurthy heading the team.

Are you sure that you were an intern with the firm (for just one month)? It appears that you are the head of their marketing and communications team !!! I agree with #14, you definitely don't sound like an intern. You should start posting under a different name next time to gain some credibility.
All the best to Krishnamurthy

But whts the exact figure then......?? Looking at the expansion plans of the firm....everyone is xcited to know about the salary they offer to recruits fresh out of law schools .....Kian .....can we hear sumthing in dis regard frm u ....??? or mayb can we hear about dis from the Intern who seems hav gt a PPO frm the firm in the end of third year itself ....??

I have double checked a little and been assured by someone at the firm that it is definitely not 20k anywhere anymore, which I do have reason to believe. The problem as with many firms is there is some variance between locations, starting salaries are not very structured and are usually reviewed after 3 months at the firm. Maybe someone from the firm can shed some light on figures here.

Best, Kian

My previous comment was not published. But a friend of mine has joined dis firm and i have seen the offer letter also where it is clearly mentioned that the salary offered would be 20k. If any doubt kindly confirm it from the offer letter.
Kian, please do not delete comments. Atleast post it. I know this for a fact that they have offered 20k for students fresh out of law school. THis is misleading students. I would appreciate if you start posting my comment.

Your previous comment was not published because its language was in bad taste. By virtue of this being largely an anonymous forum we have to check up factual claims as we are obviously unable to "confirm it from the offer letter" as you write.

In this case the firm preferred not to disclose the precise figures but told me that the 20k figure was not correct and gave believable arguments. In this case, it might very well be a misunderstanding of some sort on either side. If this is an important issue, please get your friend to email or call me or to send me the offer letter confidentially as I have no other way of confirming your claim.

Many thanks,
Kian

"Intern at Klaw" - if Krishnamurty would have wondered after your first comment as to who this possessive intern is, you have ensured that there is no ambiguity by clearly indicating them that there were 3 interns around 2 months back and you were the one from the lesser known institution. Hope that helps you in future.

Hey guys, chill. I think that we should encourage these upcoming firms started by young professionals and be happy that these comparatively new firms are growing and doing well in this competitive market, instead of casting aspersions on their staff strength and pay packages.

@Kian: i am sorry if my comment was not in good taste. I apologise for that. But i was really shocked to see [...] a firm giving incorrect information about such sensitive issues like salary. I will try to arrange for the proofs soon.

couple of things ...are you sure this firm has standard salaries across the board...I know several well known firms who do not.even for freshers I am sure the offer is largely merit based. I know several firms that make an initial offer which is subject to revision post a specified period based on the candidates performance. ( I would do this for example if I was hiring a fresher who appeared to be promising yet I was not completely certain at the interview)While I do not know your friend's credentials I m prone to think if in fact such an offer was made to him it could have been [not] standard firm policy.also are you sure he is okay with you disclosing/discussing his salary (esp if he is still at the firm!) [...] Like many other people on this forum I am of the view that it is in our best interest if younger firms start doing well. it bodes well for future generation of lawyers and partners in making.

@25/32 I don't think that it would be a good idea to share the info with Kian. Not because I doubt Kian's integrity and I am sure that he will keep the source confidential, but your friend may get into big trouble....it wont be too difficult for his employers to guess which fresher joined them recently and to whom the offer letter of Rs. 20k was provided. So, if you are a true friend, you may want to exercise some prudence.
And there is no need to make this a big deal. It is not such a sensitive issue, as u make it out to be. You would be suprised that in most firms, salaries are kept confidential and you may not even know how much your colleague is making. If your friend is happy to take the job for Rs.20k, what's your problem

Agree with no. 35...Also Ive dealt with krishnamurthy (across the negotitating table) ...the lawyers knew their stuff and were great fun to work with too ( thats saying a lot in this profession!)they are growing and have moved into a lovely new office in Mumbai (ive been there).I think we should seriously encourage younger firms..lets not get petty just cos someone other than (AZB/AMSASS/JSA) is doing well....the pie is big enough!

I think this discussion has gone somewhat off tangent. Suffice it to say that the situation is more complicated than it appears but in this case I am convinced there is not a reason to make a big song and dance about the salary.

I think the original commenter was concerned that the firm was intentionally misleading graduates.

I can say with fair confidence that this is not the case and that the firm was acting honestly and there is nothing sinister going on.

We will not insist on seeing any offer letter and in the interest of the privacy of individuals involved will leave it at that for now, as also suggested by other commenters.

Best regards,
Kian

I don't know how many of the people above are freshers. As a fresher one should really look at what area one wants to work in and try to join a firm/partner that specializes in the area. Starting salaries should not be the determinant to join a firm. The key to success in this profession is 'knowledge'.
Anonymous guest 29 Aug 2010, 01:24

@ 41 hear hear!!!!! we need more people in the profession for the right reasons. i think other than just the partner its also important to find a fit that gives you exposure to work while guiding you through it.unfortunately in the larger and more established institutions the work trickling down to the freshers is often quite mindless and unexciting.younger places i feel are more conducive to learning quicker and also other than the legal aspects make you learn the oh so important attribute of accountability sooner.however in terms of quality control it is important that the partners at the helm are both legally and administratively competent.
