KJSV partner Jayakar sets up own law firm as firm rebrands to KS, reboots Mumbai with specialist focus

Delhi-headquartered law firm Khaitan Jayakar Sud and Vohra (KJSV) has rebranded itself to KS Partners as it relaunched its Mumbai office to focus on niche practice areas, while its former Mumbai partner Mohan Jayakar left to start his own firm.

KS Partners, which until recently was headed in Mumbai by Jayakar, has now opened an office in Mumbai’s Lower Parel area in Raghuvanshi Mills Compound led by senior associate Amitesh Bhattacharya.

KS Partners’ managing partner Umesh Khaitan commented on the recent restructuring of the firm and said: “The main reason [for the restructuring] is that we are looking at the future in a slightly different manner.”

He added that the firm’s thrust would be on key areas such as infrastructure, insurance and banking with the need to specialise being at the centre. “It was after due deliberation and introspection over a period of time that resulted in the need to focus on specialisation.”

KS Partners plans to expand its general and reinsurance practices further, continuing its 2009-established “insurance management project” joint venture with UK insurance specialist firm Beachcroft, he said.

Khaitan told Legally India that he preferred a “no name situation” while talking about the firm’s rebranding and said that parting ways with Jayakar happened because of difference in their core focus.

The firm has nine partners, of whom four are equity partners, and some Delhi partners may relocate to Mumbai, he said.

Jayakar, who is now operating as Jayakar & Partners in Mumbai, was unavailable for a comment when contacted.
