Khaitan & Co Mumbai office moves North

Khaitan & Co’s Mumbai office is moving from the Ballard Estate area to Lower Parel, where it has taken a lease of a large space allowing it to double in size in future.

Mumbai partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala said: “We are moving to a swanky 32,000 square feet fancy building called One Indiabulls Centre.”

Khaitan & Co Mumbai, despite having only been founded in 2001, is by far the firm’s largest office with around 100 lawyers. New Delhi is around 40 lawyers strong by comparison.

The new office space will have a capacity of up to 350 total lawyers and support staff, said Jhunjhunwala, adding that the firm would not need the entire space immediately.

On 1 November Khaitan & Co will move to its new office in the Lower Parel region, which is very close to Amarchand Mangaldas’ Peninsula Towers office and not far from Trilegal’s office in nearby Worli.

The majority of other major Mumbai firms are still based further South around Nariman Point, Fort or Ballard Estate, where Khaitan & Co was formerly located at Meher Chambers on R K Marg.

“We could have gotten space that side of town as well,” insisted Jhunjhunwala, “but the idea was to move into one floor – the place we are currently in we have broken up offices and offices across the road [from each other]. Here we will be on one floor, one location, one office.”

“It’s a statement which we make - the first time you walk in you feel like you’re in [London’s new business district] Canary Wharf.”

Trilegal's office is in Worli and the rumor is that they are moving to Indiabulls themselves. You are right when you say that Lower Parel is fast becoming the hotspot for law firm offices. Phoenix Legal is also located in Lower Parel (next to Blue Frog).

It is rumoured thatTrilegal is moving in Delhi and Bangalore as well. Ambitious plans to do so in one fiscal as that seems to be on top of record bonuses as LI has reported.

" ... Trilegal is moving in Delhi and Bangalore ..." ???

I believe Trilegal already has an office in Delhi as well as Bangalore.

Amarchand Mangaldas and (erstwhile) Paras Kuhad also have offices in Lower Parel - Peninsula Corporate Park.

Apologies for the error, Trilegal is in fact based in Worli, which is not far from Lower Parel.

Good move for the people who are working there because now they would be able to work under one roof. Simultaneously firm has to enhance their strength as per their requirement. However market is going up and lot of people are still waiting for opportunities, so it is expecting from law firm to render some more chances to other law graduate who are still to be placed.

Fox mandal had built two swank buildings in Noida long time back when all these new and small firms were operating out of slums. Now fox's focus is only on UK and US. We are partying in our London office! Another point - we do not participate in surveys targeted at small doestic M&A deals! We are outstanding and hence standing outside of these topics.

#4.....are you really an NLS grad? REALLY???? Cos you don't seem to have understood the part of the sentence that you have quoted from #3's post.

Contrast to #3

Must feel sorry for the firms using moving in to bigger premises as a pretext to deny their associates either a good bonus or a raise!

Sad, if associates have to bear the costs of firms' vaulting ambitions! Doubly sad, as cerebral faculties maketh a firm more than anything else!

May sanity prevail!

I completely agree with # (10). A firm can never grow until and unless its associates also grow. There can not be, and should not be, any growth at the cost of an associates bonus or a raise.

Which are these firms?

I am a NLS Grad - B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) class of 2009.

'Moving' (in the context used in #3's post) means 'to start off' - unless used in a sentence in a manner as used in the title of this news item (Khaitan ... Mumbai office moves north) it connotes that (Trilegal) is about to start off in Delhi and Bangalore. Hence, the sentence could have been worded better e.g. Trilegal's Delhi and Bangalore offices are moving ... - to avoid confusion as to the intended meaning.

Before expressing doubts about one's cognitive ability, do refer a good dictionary.

Well it's called de-risking!

Look at Infosys, the IT behemoth, which has grown its real estate portfolio to obscene levels. In an around Bangalore, it is one of the biggest landlords! Do you truly believe they need all that land?

http://us.rediff.com/money/2006/jul/25infy.htm

Associate is fickle-minded, real estate is not. At least that's what partners seem to be thinking.

When foreign firms start coming in, fickle associate will be lost. But at least firms can tout the infrastructure facilities they are creating (with other essential wares) should sell-out be the only end-game.

Boss Fox Mandal is already de-risked by diverting major chunk of its billings to real estate in India and abroad. In fact, now nothing can happen to the firm even if all its partners and associates leave. [...]

Thinking only about raises or bonuses is too shallow. If one believes in his organisation (and just not money) then he should stand by its firm during such growth period. Logic is simple - if the firm grows then the benefit will come to you as well, may be a year or two later.

Haha, what do pay as rent in Mumbai/Delhi - peanuts?

Why do you buy vegetables with - home minted coins?

What do fill your car tank with - water?

Surprisingly, the best things in world are free, but everything else has a damn cost!

Mr. 16 you will slowly learn this lesson well in life. Mr. 16, may be you are young, try panning out your life a few years later when you have a kids is ready to go to school and you realise how expensive the schools are.

Will you not feel cheated if you seen partners walking out with the booty end of every year and doling out empty appreciation and thank yous to you.

I do appreciate your thoughts. We should work out a deal - We will grow together. I will keep the money and let you keep growth and satisfaction! Trust you will be satiated then.

The Firms does not seem to understand the mindset of an associate. Think of a situation when other Indian Magic Circle firms are paying sky high salaries and associate of a firm are sticking around with the growth story in anticipation of their career progression. Growth cannot be only in terms of experience but need to be in terms of some form of incentives as well. Hope #16 agrees to this point.

As an associate, I'm not concerned only about salary, important as it is. If what I get is in the ballpark of the top firms and is merit based, that is good. Having a nice and conveniently located office is also important, both for personal comfort and the image of the firm, which also reflects on the people who work in it.

Agree with 20 in case, what one gets is in the ballpark of the top firms. But one should also envisage a situation when the difference is multi-fold and is on discretion of management. Location of office necessary does not reflect the kind of people who work in it.
