Khaitan & Co hopes to hit 30 headcount in Bangalore larger office

Bangalore: Room for growth?
Bangalore: Room for growth?
Khaitan & Co has moved into a larger office in Bangalore, vowing to increase head-counts by nearly 50 per cent there within the next six months.

The new office space on Ulsoor Road, in the building above the iconic former location of “The Baby Shop” behind the Park Hotel, would house up to 55 lawyers in around 7,000 square feet of built-up area, said Bangalore resident partner Rajiv Khaitan.

The current size of the office that was founded in 1993 is 20 lawyers, including four partners of whom two joined in August and May of this year (Anindita Phukan and Abhilekh Verma respectively). In August the office was around 15 lawyers in size.

“We actually focused on growing our Bombay and Delhi practices,” said Khaitan. “If you look at the financial capital, it is Bombay and we were not there in the area and that was the foremost priority.”

“We are now focusing on growth in Bangalore,” he added. “We are trying to get hold of a few more people. Before the end of this financial year we aim to be five to six more lawyers, out of which one or two would be partner-level to expand to 27 or 30 by end of year.”

Khaitan & Co was also looking towards creating the “one firm practice” approach where the firm could provide seamless client service in individual practice areas split across offices, explained Khaitan.

Indeed. Unlike certain "magic circle" firms which hire the below average "phoren" returns and make them partners. KCo has interesting partner hires lined up!

Expansion and better infrastructure for efficient delivery is always welcome. However, it remains to be seen how the legal markets shape up in the next three quarters. Is this expansion well timed?

Regardless of the RSG FT Rankings, Khaitan can now be regarded as a serious contender to AMSS and AZB. Good show. Industry should have more quality firms.

Very true of the comments made by 6. Khaitan is closing on very fast on AMSS and AZB and probably going by the number of instructions, is at No.2 now.
