Juris Corp leaver Vandana Sekhri joins Amarchand; +3 associate hires

Former Juris Corp partner Vandana Sekhri, who resigned from 31 January, has joined Amarchand Mangaldas in Mumbai as senior consultant in the team of managing partner Cyril Shroff.

She will be part of the general corporate practice group in Mumbai from 1 May.

When she announced her resignation from Juris Corp on 24 January, where she had worked for seven years, she said in a statement at the time that she had decided to explore other opportunities.

It is understood that hiring discussions with Amarchand started only after that time.

Sekhri graduated from Government Law College Mumbai and is a qualified Bombay Incorporate Law Society (BILS) solicitor.

Amarchand’s senior consultant designation is understood to be senior to principal associate but junior to partnership.

Amarchand has also hired three other laterals, according to a statement from Amarchand.

NLSIU Bangalore graduate Prashanth Venkatesh is joining as a principal associate in finance in Bangalore after four years at Linklaters London.

Symbiosis Pune graduate Ajay Joseph was hired as a principal associate in the Mumbai corporate team having previously worked at from Khaitan & Co Mumbai for four years.

Symbiosis Pune graduate Harsh Maggon has been appointed as an associate in the Mumbai corporate practice, having worked for a total of five years at DSK Legal and Economic Laws Practice previously.

Big loss for Juris and big gain for AM!
Are we seeing the cookie crumble at Khaitan? Too many mouths to feed and to little work?

I can understand the news about Sekhri - but will every Associate move also be reported by LI henceforth?

Good AMSS in fast forward mode towards a 1000 heads. @2 - When a large number of associates join or leave a firm that is a significant industry development and needs to be reported. LI has done a good thing in reporting these movements. As regards KCO, a single exit does not mean that the ship is sinking. However, it is somewhat true that the growth in fee earners' numbers has been too fast in too short a time in KCO. Continuous flow of work can keep things steady and trouble free. Wishing the new comers into AMSS all the very best. It is for certain that AMSS is the only Indian firm that can give a challenge to the foreign firms when markets open up.

Movements of lawyers between law firms is a reality of a growth market like India. Law firms will necessarily lose and gain lawyers as they move around . But each major law firm has a core personality. Amss is mostly an organically built firm which will always have a core uniformity in it's culture . The drawback is slower growth. And clones of the brothers ! Khaitan is almost entirely inorganic with most of it's partners acquired from variety of other firms . Which makes it nearly impossible to build or sustain a culture. Growth beyond a point is impossible. At some stage large teams will leave. Easy come easy go. Azb is a hybrid but the crux is zias personality. Azbs problem is that it can never truly institutionalize. The Clifford chance episode is the clearest sign that long term a sell out is what zia wants deep down . Can't see it around ten years from now !

Amss is a firm for a test match! Azb for a 50 overs match ! Khaitan , Luthra are the T 20 variety . Or another way to look at is Amss is an ocean, azb like a lake, and Khaitan like a pond . All are different even though all have water. , !
Jsa and Luthra are hybrids! The others don't really matter !

[previously worked at from Khaitan & Co Mumbai for four years]

At from....is that a typo, or do Khaitan lawyers describe their association with the firm in one gulp?
