JSA TMT partner Asim Abbas returns to Luthra after 2 decades

Asim Abbas rejoins Luthra

J Sagar Associates (JSA) partner Asim Abbas is due to join L&L Partners in Delhi, according to two sources.

The 1990 Delhi University graduate specialises in technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) law.

This is his second innings at Luthra & Luthra, as it had been called in 2000 to 2001 when he had been a senior associate there.

He had also worked at JSA from 2001 to 2004 before returning there in 2019 from Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (following Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co, two years of running his own firm, Legal Spectrums, and in-house at Bharti Airtel).

We have reached out to L&L, JSA and Abbas for comment.

Update 18:12: Managing partner Rajiv Luthra commented:

On behalf of L&L Partners, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome back Mr Asim Abbas to the family. He has joined us to meet the requirements of our clients with dedicated focus on Technology, Media & Telecom.

Asim has over 25 years of experience in the field and his deep domain knowledge and experience is an invaluable addition to the firm. Asim will also build areas of practice including those of the future, very close to my heart, issues regarding Artificial intelligence, Block chain, IOT etc.

We look forward to his proverbial home coming after almost 19 years away from the firm.

Is partnership at JSA that bad that one is fine with going to Luthra at this time??

Nai bro. His practice is very niche. JSA wasnt able to generate enough allied work for his area, and he is no rainmaker. Simple economics and business sense at play here. See what Luthra said - " He has joined us to meet the requirements of our clients with dedicated focus on Technology, Media & Telecom". He went where the work is, simple.

Ho sakta hai. Waha pe to biggest competitor is not another law firm. Tumhara competition hai doosra team from same office or another city's JSA office.

Lol...your name literally reminds me of someone from JSA who can be accused of this.

How are Shonali and Abbas even close to big names? Whatever strategies RKL is adopting does not seem to make sense. [...] What books do these new partners have anyway?

Clearly he doesn't need to explain their values to an anonymous user

While you as a citizen may challenge modiji (though such challenge may not be of much help), how can an anonymous user unrelated with l&l challenge managing partner's act to appoint partner

If and when ms comes back, he may no longer like what he is back to, as it would have altered substantially.

RKL has really gotten back in the game, and check - mated MS!!

More big names I hear are in the joining queue.

Asim’s welcome message from JSA in 2019 and RKL now are so similar. RKL could have atleast tried to be original here - but then why make effort when we can have a joy ride on someone else’s shoulders.

Go a little further to see CAM’s press release welcoming Abbas and you’ll see that RKL has copy pasted two press releases to create his own. Maybe the ingenuity is being used only in court. Wonder whether Abbas has anything to say about this copy paste job.

Be practical. You really think RKL (or any managing partner for that matter) would write these messages? These are mostly written by secretaries.

Are these new hires indicative of a turn-around? Would this put a stop on associates fleeing L&L?
