J Sagar Associates (JSA) has promoted Vishnu Sudarsan and Varghese Thomas to its quasi-equity partner ranks, alongside 16 promotions to salaried partner level.

Sudarsan, specialising in corporate and projects, has become equity partner elect in Gurgaon, while Thomas, who specialises in corporate and banking, was promoted to equity partner elect in Mumbai, growing the size of JSA’s equity and quasi-equity partnership to around 23 after the official retirement of the firm’s founder Jyoti Sagar yesterday.

Equity partners elect enjoy the same privileges as equity partners but can not accede to the equity partnership deed due to the 1956 Companies Act 20-partner limit on partnerships.

This is a HUGE number of partners. JSA clearly means serious business. Good to see their new strategy is to increase headcount and go all out. Time to regain lost market share from Khaitan perhaps. Kian - would be good if you could cover which practice areas partners have been promoted in.

I guess if going into great detail it is slightly more complicated than that, but in substance is this not correct?

The 20-partner partnership limit is actually contained in the Companies Act and not the Partnership Act, I was informed a little while ago...

Dear STRANGE, you get the law correct and see s.11 of the Companies Act, 1956 and check the [...] out for yourself and inform us if the provision does not provide for limitation on the number of partners in a non-banking firms to be 20 and in banking as 10....So, Kian's reasoning is essentially correct, but for people like you, some more analysis and citation of sections was required.

Thanks and Bhumgara are friends and JSA's jewels. Never in their life did they have a duel. Work is their life fuel. Not making them partners would have been very cruel.

What does this mean for AZB and TTA? These are the only major firms left that have not announced any partnerships since donkeys years. Guess they have to show theyre going strong too otherwise markets will viw it as a sign of weaknss.

Hilarious - like AZB cares what the "market" thinks! The only market that matters is the "client market" No one cares about what other lawyers think of a firm! And I really doubt the client market will bother too much about new partners or judge who to give work to based on that! Truly a silly comment.

AZB is [...]. Lawyers at all level are leaving them left right and centre. Look at the number of partners exit. What else could you expect from a dictatorial firm.

Can I also be a partner - I have a law degree and passed high school before that. And I will work hard to do as much as possible for minimum fees.
