The year-old Chennai writ petition against 31 foreign law firms in India has been adjourned to 2 August with the filing of an affidavit by the government today.

The matter last heard on 8 March was adjourned to 19 April after a series of similar postponements citing ongoing discussions between the government, the Bar Council of India (BCI) and the law ministry.

Petitioner A K Balaji’s counsel R Ezhilarasan told Legally India: “The Government of India (GOI) filed an affidavit today saying that the matter is under consultation between the BCI and law ministry, so the matter is adjourned to 2 August.

“It was submitted by the government that the amendment is under consultation, so we didn’t argue in the matter of the writ petition and now simply this matter is adjourned for raising the course of the proposal by the GOI and the ministry of justice.”
