Khaitan & Co has promoted 42 of its fee-earners to principal associate (PA), and 65 to senior associate (SA), in a round that was heavily dominated by corporate throughout all four cities, according the full list we have obtained.

Across the firm, the corporate practice area made up 44 of the promotions.

Mumbai was the office with the largest number of associate promos, with a total of 56 promotions (including 24 new PAs and 32 SAs).

Delhi was next, with a total of 33, followed by 10 promotions in Khaitan’s traditional old-school home of Kolkata, and 8 in Bangalore.

Bangalore’s promotions were completely dominated by corporate, which accounted for 7 out of the 8 promotions (the one remaining promotion was in the disputes team). This no doubts reflect the office’s home to such as tech clients as Flipkart (now Walmart) and Ola.

Kolkata, on the other hand, was dominated by disputes, which made up 7 out of 10 promotions.

Mumbai too lived up as its reputation as the firm’s corporate powerhouse, with 25 associate promotions in corporate and funds, compared to only 9 in disputes. Banking, tax and IP were the next-largest practice areas in Mumbai, each with between 6 and 4 job title elevations respectively. Energy and infrastructure, capital markets and competition also saw a smaller number of promotions (see full details below).

Last but not least, living up as the country’s litigation capital, promotions were nearly split evenly between corporate (12) and disputes (9), with a variety of other practice areas (most notably, competition, TMT and real estate had more promotions in Delhi than Mumbai, with 2 each).

Khaitan had also announced 11 promotions to partnership last week.

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas had promoted a total of 21 new principal associates and 36 senior associates (totalling to 61), as we had reported yesterday.
