Gautam Khaitan gets bail for Rs 25+ lakh bond after another 2-month jail stint

Khaitan is out again, for now

OP Khaitan & Co founding partner Gautam Khaitan has secured bail on Tuesday after his second extended stint in jail relating to the long-running AgustaWestland chopper deal investigation, reported The Hindu and others.

Special Judge Arvind Kumar stipulated a bail bond of Rs 25 lakh and and two sureties of a similar amount, according to the Hindu.

Apparently having a law firm counted in his favour: “While granting bail to the accused, the Judge said: “It is noted that the accused is 54 years of age and has roots in the society. He has a law firm based in India, besides having properties in India. Family members of the accused are also based in India.”

The judge also noted that he had also returned to India from trips abroad 120 times (each done with the court’s permission), so the Enforcement Directorate’s argument that he would abscond didn’t hold any water with the judge.

The case has moved glacially since Khaitan was first arrested in 2014, where he was for nearly three months before being bailed out for Rs 10 lakh.

He was rearrested in early February 2019 over the ED’s claim of new allegations of money laundering against him.
