Exclusive: Kolkata's young Argus Partners expands to Mumbai

Argus Partners, which broke away from Amarchand Mangaldas Kolkata last year, has set up a Mumbai office relocating partner Ramya Hariharan to the city full-time while partner Krishnava Dutt will also spend half his time in the financial hub.

The 600 square foot office is based in central Mumbai on the Worli sea-face and will be dealing initially with corporate, banking and projects work, with the firm eventually planning to also move into capital markets.

Hariharan said: “Most of our instructing clients are from Bombay and it being the financial capital of India, which is why we started in Bombay.”

Dutt (pictured) agreed and added that it was a natural corollary to set up there. “There were transactions we were doing that had nothing to do with Kolkata and clients gradually started liking the work and said we’d have to start in Bombay.”

“We have a couple of mandates already in our first month itself,” he added.

The firm is now 20 lawyers in size, said Dutt.

Argus Partners was founded by former Amarchand Mangaldas’ Kolkata partner and head Dutt in September 2009, together with Hariharan.

It rapidly expanded and by December consisted of 13 lawyers and two partners.

why do u use the word "upstart"?? just bcoz it is not a SILF firm? it is an offensive word.

'Upstart' was supposed to be an interesting way to describe a start-up that has shaken up the Kolkata market quite a bit in a short space of time.

If it is considered offensive we can change it as it was not meant to be.

"Upstart" is disrespectful to Krishnava who parted ways with ICICI and Amarchand simply because they remained [...]. He is a very good lawyer and should not be trated in this manner simply because he's not the son or grandson of a certain cyril / shardul

In this context "young upstart" means entrepreneur but we have removed "upstart" out of the headline since it seems to offend so many.

Congratulations Krishnava on the expansion. Although I feel its too early to judge Argus Partners. Krishnava is no doubt a brilliant lawyer. He is however currently reaping the benefits of a largely ex-Amarchand team. It remains to be seen how the rest of the team faces up to the challenge. It will take much more than Krishnava's individual brilliance to sustain a Mumbai office.

@9: Hey cartoon, can u give more details about Argus partners... whats the kindoff work they have done.. If they have picked the next big thing what would be the salary there and whats the kindoff work they do??

as far as i know associates at argus are ex-AMSS employees who are NLU grads, so i don't see why they should be of poor quality.

in any case, most ppl quit AMSS after a few years, so i don't see what the fuss is about. probably some frustrated loser is jealous that someone young is heading a start-up. i'm guessing that this person is not an NLU grad and is in his late-thirties and still a senior associate.

Good for KD. In his AMSS Calcutta Delhi region days, the last market he could touch was Bombay.
