Boss, Noojie is an internal term that we use in conversations - don't put it on LI!!

Internal and ridiculous sounding term, hence the embarrassment. Carry on Kian ;)

On an entirely different note, what's with the new look of Bar & Bench? It looks boring and dead. Plus you have to pay to read the columns! LI rocks! (Kian, please don't get ideas (of charging) from B&B.

Thanks! :)

To be honest, I think their new look is very clean and stylish. But I don't think it'd work for LI for a variety of reasons, one being the amount of our content (the other being that we can't afford good designers! :).

As for paywall, I understand the commercial pressures - online journalism is in a seriously difficult phase of its life that's very hard to monetise, especially in India.

That said, I believe strongly that information should be free and available and a paywall would be one of our absolute last resorts if all other commercial options have failed.

If you want to help us explore alternative models and want to throw some money our way as a hat tip and to show that you appreciate what we do, please do click here:
https://www.instamojo.com/@legallyindia

I'd be overjoyed if LI could one day subsist on the charity and goodwill of its readers! :)

Kian, it is a fact that you have more visitors than bar n bench. You do get ads on your site. You don't need money from your readers. Come on, you can monetize it better. Charity from your readers must be your last resort. N it doesn't cost you much to make li less cluttered. Getting down to the business, where is lks Gurgaon story.. Prachi was supposed to cover that rite..
kianganz 15 May 2015, 20:55

Dunno, voluntary reader contributions is a pretty appealing model in many ways, as it means we could be completely independent from any commercial pressures or pleasing advertisers (which we're luckily not subject to, but still). And it's better than a paywall in many ways (though it's probably not possible to scale or achieve significant revenue, since most people are cheapskates :)

But you're right, we need to find something sustainable other than just ads but in my opinion monetisation online is honestly one of the biggest challenges (and opportunities) that journalism has possibly ever faced.

Happy to hear intelligent suggestions though.

By the way, does anyone happen to know anyone who's signed up for the B&B paywall? I've yet to meet anyone, but if they get entire law schools or law firms to sign up, it could make some commercial sense...

Kian,

What does Noojie mean?

Is Manisha not from Shroff's family.
kianganz 15 May 2015, 14:38
+1 -1
Noojie is what NUJS Cal grads are colloquially called (though perhaps only in more recent batches), just like those from NLS are called Law Schoolites (with capital L and S) and more boringly there's also Nalsarites.

RMLNLU is called Ramlu (though Ramlu-ites, I understand, hate the word), and JGLS is Jiggles, which is perhaps a tad too obscene for everyday usage.

Any others?

Oh, and no, I'm almost certain Manisha Shroff is not related to the Shroff & Co family.

Kian, she is related.

She is Cyril's uncle's son's wife's daughters's husband's father's second cousin's daughter

Yeah, nice try... That sounds highly dubious... :)

Nice going though - was trying to figure out what that would make them in your hypothetical example when I got to husband.

So here's a fun exercise for anyone bored in the office: In the hypothetical relationship LOL describes, what would be the proper name for that relation?

Bho is finance head. Santosh is project finance. Manisha is in Niloufer Lam's team. They do debt capital n debt finance. And in last 6 months, Manisha is the fourth one to quit that team. Therefore, it make sense to shut shop.

B&b has specifically made lks story pay walled though the much older ones are still free yet. Kian, break their back. Make Li the next Google. You should show them newer ways to make money.. They can be Microsoft. But you be closer to Google model.
kianganz 15 May 2015, 21:09
+4 -1
As for LKS opening an office in Gurgaon - yes, it's Prachi's beat but she's been unwell this week. We'll try and cover it in the coming week or so, though at the end of the day, it's only a Gurgaon office so it'll hardly cause anyone any sleepless nights if we don't cover it tonight :)

As for Google and Microsoft, I'm not quite sure what you mean, other than Google vaguely standing for openness and availability of all information (entirely self-servingly obviously). But MS is doing a lot on that front too under their new CEO Nadella, who's trying to make MS platform agnostic, is launching apps for every platform, even their rivals', etc. And they're giving Windows 10 away for free and their Office suite used to be worth paying for. Apple and Facebook on the other hand still love their walled gardens.

Anyway, it's not really my job to break anyone else's back or business model but I'm rather interested to observe if and how it will work out for them (it's also hardly new - they've had a fairly porous paywall up for at least a year now surely?)

However, yes, we will stick to re-reporting stories by them, the MSM and anyone else that we think are editorially relevant.
Re-reporting 18 May 2015, 08:10
+0 -0
Kian, By Re-reporting their news you will possibly kill their business model even though you give credit to them for the article. (Possibly also yours if you did get pushed into it)

Though legally permissible is it ethical? Especially since you have clearly stated that this is the last form of monetisation that you would consider.

Its immature to use 'Noojie'. I cannot recall any batch at Nujs using that term colloquially or otherwise (leave aside earlier batches who are totally clueless about it) I mean...is this the only thing you have, Kian, to poke fun at Nujs?? Some sense needed please.
