It’s been a long time coming, with rumours swirling for months now, but Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) partner and Delhi head Percy Billimoria has given notice last month and is set to start up an independent counsel practice, we have reliably learned.
He is likely to become independent and start a Delhi-based barristers’ chambers-style practice by the beginning of August, but has been on vacation the whole of this month.
It is understood that in late May, CAM discussed the terms of Billimoria’s exit.
We have reached out to Billimoria for comment.
Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas managing partner Cyril Shroff declined to comment.
He had joined CAM in 2016, at the height of the CAM-SAM-AZB wars, from AZB & Partners Delhi.
While Billimoria’s joining had steadied the ship in Delhi, CAM can expect reinforcements in Delhi with long-time Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas corporate partner Akila Agrawal due to join at the latest by August.
CAM’s Delhi office currently has around 164 fee-earners and 32 partners.

Best of Luck Percy. Happy Arguing.
Show me the money, baby???
There was gossip going around that few days back [...]
Bahram, Percy and Naval!
Is there some dark horse? A surprise choice may be.
He gave his best to The firms like AZB and CAM.
so what if he left.
This will be the fresh start for Percy Sir, As everyone has right to.
And shall all prayer for Percy Sir
Good Luck
Shardul reigns supreme. CAM fanfare about Percy replacing Ashwath in high profile trade remains bunkum. The one respectable face of CAM Delhi left in 2 years. Shows how badly CAM is bleeding.
Big competition coming up in Litigation Circle.
Wish you well Percy and wish CAM all the very best as they move forward from this.
1. He worked till the early hours of the morning almost every day. This is not a badge of honour like some of the awestruck posters are making it out to be, this is stupidity. I'm sure he could have brought that 78 crores down to 75, hired a few more people, and made sure everyone had a life.
2. He promised a court clerk that he'd get his brother a job. Many MNCs reading this would feel uncomfortable working with someone who is not above trading favours. Thankfully for the Indian Law Firm world, foreign GCs don't read LI Comments.
2. To your point on helping out the brother of a court clerk, I am sure he wasnt promising equity in the firm also would like to know what kickback he got out of helping a court clerk. It's his benevolence as managing partner of a firm which i understand was not allowed by the top management. The firm is filled with kids of influential client and bureaucrats (and we all know the kickbacks a Firm gets) and I assure my friend almost all the MNCs of the world have similar practice.
If Akila is being brought in as the Head of Delhi office, she surely has a task at hand. CS and VS need to announce a credible face to the Delhi office soon.
