Breaking: Abhijit Joshi, AZB Mumbai’s first partner & CEO, quits for entrepreneurship

Joshi: Entrepreneurial spirit
Joshi: Entrepreneurial spirit

AZB & Partners senior partner and chief executive officer (CEO) Abhijit Joshi will leave by 15 November.

It is understood that an announcement was made to AZB’s partnership yesterday about Joshi’s departure.

Joshi confirmed his leaving and that he would explore entrepreneurial pursuits, but declined to comment further.

Joshi is a Mumbai University graduate who became a Bombay Incorporate Law Society solicitor, completing his articles under Amarchand Mangaldas managing partner Cyril in the early nineties. He also became a qualified Solicitor of England & Wales.

From Amarchand, he joined Dua Associates and as a partner in 2001 he joined the Chambers of Zia Mody, as it was then called, as its first lateral partner when Mody’s chambers converted to a partnership of four.

AZB name partner Bahram Vakil joined shortly afterwards, creating CZB, followed by now-J Sagar Associates (JSA) partner Akshay Chudasama, and a merger with Delhi-based Ajay Bahl in 2004 to create AZB & Partners.

Joshi was appointed as AZB’s CEO in 2011, as reported by Legally India at the time, managing the Western region of the firm – the Mumbai, Bangalore and Pune offices - alongside AZB Mumbai-based managing partner Mody.

He specialises in corporate and M&A, and has led on such landmark deals as the Rs 5,150 crore Tech Mahindra - Satyam Computer Services merger.

Mody commented: “Abhijit has had a long innings with us and has been a valued member of our Firm. He very much wants to pursue his own entrepreneurial path and start up on his own. We will miss him. We wish him all the very best for the future.”

So couldn't understand clearly, is he a Bombay solicitor or not? The article suggests that he completed his articles but doesn't clarify if he is a Bombay solicitor.

No, before people jump on, I am not trying to start any debate regarding the Sols, just curious for the info.

Thanks

Yes, he is a solicitor, will clarify the copy so there's no doubt...

Its a great move for Abhijit. He was certainly one of the best partners to work for at AZB and a great human being. Both clients and associates hold him in high regard and he is bound to do well. Best of luck!

These moves are interesting because they make one think whether a law firm career is sustainable/personally rewarding post the first 10-12 years. I believe there was someone else who had left to take a one year sabbatical sometime back? Why do people leave? It would be interesting to know. Any thoughts/wild speculations?

Well, the last time he wished to resign he was designated the CEO of the firm - a mere titular role with no meaning given how Zia functions! So, finally, he had to put his foot down...
Finally? 4 Nov 2014, 07:32

After so many years, Zia had nothing else to offer him. Titles mean nothing (which makes me wonder why he accepted that bribe in the first place!) and more money would surely depend on his performance.

Lots of people have left AZB before. And people have speculated each time about how the departure would be a big blow to the firm. It would be interesting to see what has happened to people who have left and set up on their own.

Abhijit seems to have been wanting to leave for a while and has been open about it for a very very long time. Having obtained the fancy title, what more was there to ask for? More salary? That would have come at the expense of younger, hungrier partners who are together with Zia the real backbone of the firm. It will be very interesting to see how he fares without the backing of the AZB name, if he is really doing something on his own and not just joining another firm. I suspect not very well, but he is more senior than those who have left before and as a result may be one of the only ones really able to make this work.

I dont think this will have a significant impact on AZB though. It will generate more heat than light.
Insider 4 Nov 2014, 13:28
+19 -4
Younger partners the real backbone? Abhijit has been bringing in the most number of clients to the firm and generating the most revenues for a number of years now. Would AZB still survive - of course yes, the brand is strong. Would Abhijit do well - of course yes, he has a stellar reputation and a great work ethic.
Well wisher 6 Nov 2014, 13:24
+1 -2
Then hopefully a good thing for both parties. Abhijit gets to strike off on his own, and AZB loses a partner who was very unhappy there anyway.

You seem to have forgotten one important partner who, directly and indirectly through her reputation, generates the most revenue at AZB.

Big News this! But CEO is a fancy designation in a Firm!
First Partner?! 4 Nov 2014, 08:52
+1 -0
Kian,

Slightly misleading title. The article makes clear that he was the first lateral hire as a partner, but that is different to being the first ever partner. There were other partners before Abhijit joined.
kianganz 4 Nov 2014, 10:42
+1 -0
I believe that until he joined, it was a sole proprietorship firm. When he joined as a partner, he, two existing members of the firm, and Zia all became partners at once. So that would give him the (joint) honour of being one of the first partners at the firm, and as far as I know, there weren't any other partners before him...
First Partner?! 4 Nov 2014, 12:11
+5 -0
That is interesting - specially for a firm that is still considered a sole proprietorship! Wrongly, of course.

Why are you not publishing my comment about another possible exit in AZB? Its fine to censor comments for an exclusive story which you are trying to verify, but alright to publish any other rubbish personal attack comment that people put up? What hypocrisy!
kianganz 4 Nov 2014, 12:37
+9 -0
Yes, that's correct, we sometimes moderate comments that we're working on breaking exclusively or that are not yet verified (particularly when rumours of a partner's exit, if not confirmed, can be quite damaging to that partner's career if not verified properly).

In your case, I believe that your sources are correct, but we haven't reached out to the partner in question yet for comment.

Still unable to fathom why Indian law firms cannot encourage entrepreneurship within their fold. Why does one have to lie, prolong/hide reverts on future plans or take covers to start up on their own? I'm sure AJ has it figured since this isn't teenage entrepreneurship nor is far away from colossal deals.

Seems all Firms are concerned about the numbers game (personnel and profitability, not productivity). One needs to remember, in this field streamlined pyramids and not cylindrical or bell or diamond structures work best.

Dude, Vada Paav

You don't make sense at all. No law firm (whether Indian, UK, US) is to serve an associate/partner's entrepreneurship ambitions. It is left to the individual.

Secondly and obviously, Firms are in the number game. Just like Ambanis, Adanis, Tatas, etc. Why shouldn't they be?

AZB is an institution and will certainly go on to higher achievements - there can be no doubt. AJ, on the other hand, is a stellar rockstar who will reach his own highs.

Ha Ha ! the CEO designation is a joke. end of the day, the managing/senior most partners take all decisions.
Some firms even have HR Heads and Managers - the biggest joke. The partners interview candidates, evaluates associates, decide on their bonuses, promotes them to the next level, terminates their services - so wtf is the HR manager there for, exactly?

CEO in a lawnfirm is the head of administration... The said CEO will do all the stuff no one else in the law firm wants to do..
Bhonsle 5 Nov 2014, 11:54
+6 -3
And such administrators are not good lawyers... That is why law firms have such designates so that good lawyers can focus on the actual stuff...
kianganz 5 Nov 2014, 11:57
+1 -10
COO is head of administration, I think CEO is more of a strategic role, though some admin is also involved.

At most foreign firms, that split is usually between managing partner (COO-style responsible for admin), and senior partner (more strategic CEO-style leadership).

But to say that such administrators are not good lawyers is wrong.

However, it's correct to say that most lawyers are NOT good administrators, and some administrators are not good lawyers, but they're not mutually exclusive.

I agree with Kian and disagree with Bhonsle.
Bhonsle 5 Nov 2014, 12:48

Kian, in the indian context, if a lawyer / partner has more than one title / designation, it clearly means that the said lawyer / partner has less focus on getting the business into the firm... This is the reason for another title, whether its CEO or COO.. Also, AJ was CEO designate and AZB does not have a COO...

In end 2005 early 2006 there was a merger of two Mumbai based I.T./software companies. I appeared as an Intervenor in the matter and opposed the merger; the merger was sanctioned by the Bombay High Court in end Feb 2006. AZB Partners had the mandate for that merger, and Abhijit Joshi handled the project for the law firm.

Nine years later it's 'deja vu' once more. The company is seeking to merge with another I.T. company and once again I am going to oppose this merger, but this time I will also be seeking to strike down 'ab initio' the original merger which took place in early 2006 based on the legal principle which I believe is followed in mature democracies viz. "Fiat Justitia, Ruat Coleum - Let Justice Be Done, Though The Heavens May Fall." Let us see whether India has become a mature democracy in the last 9 years.

Cool, nicely done- one thing, I gave slightly wrong instructions.

Once uploaded on imgur, you need to right click (or long-tap) on the actual image on the imgur website, and select copy image URL or copy image location.

That URL, ending in .jpg, you'd then post into the LI [ img ] tag.

So the last has been spoken - he left bcoz it was too much for him to handle the pressures of working with Zia and a super set of younger partners.
