Bharucha & Partners takes second office, aims to double headcount

Bharucha & Partners is moving its corporate department and half the firm into Talwar Thakore Associates former Mumbai office, almost doubling its available floorspace in Mumbai.

All of its 15 corporate lawyers headed by the firm's co-founding partner Alka Bharucha will move into the premises of roughly 5,000 square foot in South Mumbai's Ballard Estate office tomorrow.

Bharucha & Partners' litigation and other practices will remain in its existing Colaba office of 6,000 square feet, nearby the Taj Mahal hotel.

Alka Bharucha said: "We've expanded more than we've planned to – that's the reason that we've had to take additional office space."

She explained that the firm had doubled in size to 30 lawyers since first starting up two years ago and was aiming to follow the same or higher growth in the coming years.

"For us it's been important to stay in South Mumbai because our litigation and dispute resolution practice is fairly substantial," she explained. "For the time being we'll have two offices - it's an administrative nightmare but we'll manage."

Talwar Thakore moved into its new office in the nearby Fort area in South Mumbai late last month.

Talwar Thakore's former and current offices are fitted out to the specifications of the firm's best friend firm Linklaters.

Alka Bharucha said that it was an advantage to move into the former office of another law firm. "We've got to do some things to meet our specifications but on the whole it works."

Bharucha's new corporate office is in the Hague Building on 9 Sprott Road, next door to J Sagar Associates' (JSA) Mumbai office.
