AZB partner Kalpana Merchant also resigns, may start on her own [UPDATE-1]

AZB & Partners Mumbai partner Kalpana Merchant is leaving to pursue opportunities on her own, confirmed AZB senior partner Bahram Vakil today.

AZB & Partners Mumbai real estate and corporate partner Kalpana Merchant is leaving to pursue opportunities on her own, confirmed AZB senior partner Bahram Vakil today.

It is understood that Merchant may start her own firm, though she could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.

Update 17:41: Merchant has confirmed that she would start her own law firm but declined to comment further.

Before joining AZB she used to be an equity partner at Kanga & Co.

Her resignation coincides with that of fellow Mumbai partner Shuva Mandal, who is set to join Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas in Mumbai.

Vakil commented: “We thank them for their valuable and dedicated contributions and wish them all the very best.”

With shuva's news out on the same day, this has lost a bit of traction. But Kalpana is the only senior partner directly to have been hired into the senior partnership in the last 10 years. Talk abt covering up losses!

Shuva is nothing without Zia's back up. Even now he needs a Akshay. Individually he would be finished. See Kalpana. She can fly solo. Shuva doesnt have the wings. So good choice. Akshay has one more mouth to feed.
