ARA Law bulks up with Kanga & Co infrastructure partner

ARA Law has hired Kanga & Co partner Ashish Bhakta as a partner to head its infrastructure practice.

Ashish Bhakta will be ARA’s third partner in the firm and joined today. At least one former Kanga & Co associate is likely to join him by the end of this week.

ARA co-founding partner Rajesh Begur said: “The focus that the country has on infrastructure is what I feel will lead the infra structure practice and give it the fillip that is required in that space.”

Ashish Bhakta said he would focus mainly on infrastructure and Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI)-related litigation.

Bhakta, who is the nephew of Kanga & Co senior partner ML Bhakta, had been with the firm as a partner for three years in Mumbai before which he was at J Sagar Associates. He had graduated in 2000 from GJ Advani college in Mumbai.

Kanga & Co partner Preeti Mehta confirmed Ashish Bhakta’s departure.

this is unrelated to the topic, but the mention of kanga always brings back a hilarious memory. i once received an email from an associate of this firm. the "k" and "n" keys on the keyboard are close to each other, so this guy mistakenly wrote: "I represent Nanga and & Co"!! LOL. True story.

ARA started off with a bang and was once, in the early 2000's, a very promising and upcoming firm. However, with the loss of Aliff and combined with other factors, have not been able to quite match its potential and down the line, like P&A and Titus, lost the plot. Firms like Rajani, Vaish & Trilegal grew much faster during the same period. Good to know that they are now back on expansion mode. I wish them the best

I have heard ARA is not a partnership in the true sense. Rajesh owns the firm and maintain a tight control and the others are called partners but clearly you cannot be a partner in a proprietorship.

For that matter, besides promoters, no professionals can aspire to be partner in any law firm in India.

@7, but is that not true for most firms in India? "Partners" are but just a hogwash. the control (and the profits) remains with one individual, at the most two (maybe brothers, father-son duo)
