Luthra associate takes partnership at Universal as firm aims to go national

Bangalore headquartered Universal Legal has hired a Luthra & Luthra senior associate as a Delhi partner while the firm prepares to open in Mumbai as a precursor to becoming a fully national firm.

Luthra & Luthra litigation senior associate Kapil Arora will head up Universal Legal's one-year-old Delhi office of five lawyers.

Arora said: "It is an up-and-coming law firm, I consider this as one of the good opportunities for my professional growth."

Luthra founder and managing partner Rajiv Luthra said that he wished Arora well in his new role.

Universal Legal was co-founded in 2005 in Bangalore by FoxMandal's former Bangalore head Partha Mandal (pictured) and Aarthi Sivanandh, who is now based in Chennai with around seven lawyers.

The firm is around 30 lawyers strong, with three equity partners, three non-equity partners.

Senior partner Mandal said that the firm was looking to start a Mumbai office by the end of this financial year.

Bangalore corporate, real estate and IP partner Sharanya G Ranga has already moved to Mumbai and started working from home and pitching for local clients.

Mandal said that the intention was to take on office space and associates in Mumbai by the end of this financial year and to open up further offices at a rate of around one per year.

"We are looking for natural but at the same time aimed growth," he explained. "We intend to have offices in Hyderabad, Kolkata and Pune. We hope it will come immediately after Bombay but will be quite a bit of work."

Overall, he added, he would like the firm to grow by another 20 lawyers this year.

Universal Legal has a best friends relationship with The Chugh Firm, which has offices in California, New Jersey and Atlanta.
