Khaitan & Co Delhi litigation partner Gauri Rasgotra is set to join Amarchand Mangaldas in Delhi, as part of Amarchand Mumbai managing partner Cyril Shroff’s new Amarchand.
Rasgotra, who completes 20 years with Khaitan this year including a two year break as director at the US’ George Washington University (GWU) in 2007, will leave the firm on 31 March to join Amarchand as a partner.
Her team at Khaitan now works under Delhi litigation partner Sanjeev Kapoor who will take over her matters.
Rasgotra joined Khaitan in 1995 and is a partner at the firm since 2004. She left the firm in 2007 to head the GWU’s India Studies Centre and rejoined as litigation head in 2009.
Correction: The initially published version of this story stated that Rasgotra was litigation head. An authoritative source at Khaitan said she was not hired as a litigation head, contrary to our report from 2009. We are reaching out to Rasgotra to confirm.
She was not reachable for comment by phone and email since Monday.
Cyril Shroff did not respond to requests for comment.
Khaitan partner Rabindra Jhunjhunwala commented: “We wish her well.”
Amarchand is set to split into two between Cyril and his Delhi-based brother Shardul Shroff by 1 April. The combined firm’s offices in Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad are under Cyril and offices in Delhi, Calcutta, Gurgaon and Ahmedabad are under Shardul. After the split each brother will open offices for his part of the firm in the other’s cities as well.
Cyril has finalised a lease in Delhi’s Saket area for Amarchand Mumbai’s Delhi office while Shardul is in talks to merge with various Mumbai firms and lateral hires, as first reported by Legally India.
Update: Bar & Bench also reported that Economic Laws Practice (ELP) partner Kirat Singh Nagra had resigned and would also join Cyril, with his departure confirmed by ELP managing partner Rohan Shah.
Khaitan & Co Delhi partner Asim Abbas would join Shardul, reported Bar & Bench.
Abbas had internally announced in Khaitan that he might take up opportunities in-house.
He had joined Khaitan in 2010 from his start-up telecoms boutique Legal Spectrums. Abbas has been unreachable for comment by Legally India since Monday.
Bar & Bench also reported that Cyril would likely sign a new partnership deed tomorrow, with Shardul “expected to follow suit soon” after.

All the best Mr. Abbas, who will take care of HR (KCO):)
What?!
Is that a question or what? :S
I'll show him, each brother thought,
Partners were hired and property was bought,
But maybe they'd both really just lost the plot!
I'm told it's largely headed by Mr. Ajay Bhargava, followed by Mr. Sanjeev Kapoor.
Mr Bhargava and Mr Kapoor are captain of their own ships and are sailing strongly.
Also heard Ms Gauri practice was reduced to advisory only and was not in active litigation practice for a long.
select u r partners carefully nahin to Nam bhul jayega goodwill ye badal jayega.
Let us a prepare a list of star partners for Cyril to try and lure. (esp. those that are stars but not rainmakers), so that Cyril doesnt look nervous about his client book.

Dikha do existing firms ko unki aukaad
Sab ke liye mauka mauka mauka mauka".....
Kian..the right thing would be to clarify this. Pls don't rush to stories with false facts. It's embarassing.
We should have double checked on that if it's still the case. Will update the story once we get confirmation.
Could imagine there are issues around bringing in new partners while mediation is ongoing...
Hungama hai kyon barpaa...!!!
Gauri is going out with a bang, how is she a back stabber!!!
