JSA powers up energy with Brit ONG counsel Nitin Banerjee as partner

Former Trilegal senior associate Nitin Banerjee joined J Sagar Associates (JSA) Delhi’s energy practice as retained partner on 3 August, after five years spent with international oil and natural gas (ONG) major BG Group in India and the UK.

Banerjee (pictured) told Legally India: “There are a lot of exciting transactions happening in the Indian energy space and it came to a point where I said that it is time for me to go back. I value the experience gained working for an oil and gas major, and I’ll use it to help the clients and build the practice here in JSA.

“Also, India is home. Returning to India was always part of the plan.”

Banerjee graduated from Lucknow University’s college of law in 2001 and worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers’ (PwC) legal division until 2002 when he joined Trilegal Delhi. After nearly three years of general corporate and ONG work at Trilegal, Banerjee joined BG Group’s India operations as deputy legal counsel in 2005.

He moved to BG in Reading, near London, in January 2008, where he was senior lead counsel for the Africa, Middle East and Asia (AMEA) region, working on Israel, Gaza and Nigeria, and most recently as head of legal operations in Tanzania.

“Working in-house in oil and gas in multiple jurisdictions was a great opportunity for me to expand my skills in energy-related work in oil and gas,” said Banerjee, adding that while at BG, he felt there was a general lack of specialist oil and gas lawyers in India who had transactional experience in the private practice market.

“Oil and gas is different from other industries,” he said, but noted that there were also similarities with projects in natural resources and extractive industries, such as mining. “I see this as another potential opportunity to expand the practice.”

Banerjee, who is also qualified to practice in England and Wales, has advised on upstream, midstream and downstream transactions and on deals relating to the offshore Panna, Mukta and Tapti fields, a publicly listed downstream gas transmission and distribution company, Gujarat Gas Company Limited (GGCL), Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and a midstream LNG marketing subsidiary, according to a statement from JSA.

JSA founder partner Jyoti Sagar, who is set to retire from the firm in April 2013, said in a press release: “The JSA partnership remains committed to creating a growing pool of leaders for tomorrow to whom the baton will pass.”
