Legally India reliably understands that Kunal Gupta, Gurgaon-based partner of international accountancy and consulting firm Grant Thornton India, is set to join Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas to head up its forensics team as a partner.

Managing partner Cyril Shroff and Gupta did not respond to emailed requests for comment since yesterday.

We have reached out to Grant Thornton for comment.

Gupta is an NLSIU Bangalore graduate from 2004, having followed that up with an LLM at the University of Rotterdam in 2005, an LLM in law and economics from the University of Hamburg in 2006, and a MALD in international finance from Tufts University’s school of law and diplomacy until 2008.

His career includes a one-year stint at Luthra & Luthra between 2004 and 2005, three years at the World Bank between 2008 and 2011, and three years as an associate director at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) until he joined Grant Thornton in 2014 as a partner.

According to his profile, he is a:

Forensics partner involved in all aspects of business development and execution on forensic services mandates. Includes FCPA investigations, UK Bribery Act investigations, forensic due diligence, third party reviews, vendor assessments, trade compliance reviews, internal investigations, disputes and expert witness support.

Update 11 February: CAM has released a statement with the following comments from Shroff and Gupta:

On his role, Managing Partner Cyril Shroff commented, “Forensics & Investigations compliments our other practice areas and we are delighted to have Kunal on board. Kunal would add immense value to the firm given his rich and diversified sectoral experience in forensics”

Kunal Gupta, on his appointment said, "With the increase in frequency and sophistication of forensics, white collar crime and regulatory supervision, clients have a profound need for law firms which can understand and advise on matters that traverse technology, legal and financial domains. Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, offers an excellent opportunity to serve clients in this evolving area of practice, and I am excited to be part of it”
