Cyril Amarchand Hyderabad head Rahul Sarella exits

Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas Hyderabad partner and office head Rahul Sarella has resigned, according to three authoritative sources.

We could not authoritatively confirm his next move at the time of publication.

Managing partner Cyril Shroff commented: “He is indeed moving on. It is a friendly exit. We as a firm are re-focusing our practice in Hyderabad to infrastructure and the opportunities arising from the bifurcation of the State. Harita Rao, our projects partner will be leading the office for now. As above, we are intending to refocus and grow the office.”

“We understand that Rahul is currently intending to run his own firm but his plans are yet shaping up. Depending upon how they do, we intend to use him for our litigation work. Rahul is and will continue to be a friend of the firm.”

Sarella was not reachable for comment on his mobile phone today.

The NLSIU Bangalore graduate and Chevening Scholar began his career at Wadia Ghandy in Mumbai, then moved to KSB Partners, became a partner at Tatva Legal in Hyderabad for a year and then joined what-was-then Amarchand Mangaldas in July 2013.

BCG come on time to tell papa and baba to setup another committee?
On another note, instead of throwing summer parties in London maybe CAM needs to focus on partner and associate retention! They are burning....

Cyril seems to have the standard response for all partner exits. "We intend to engage him as an external counsel". He Saidthe same thing when the Delhi litigation partners had quit a month back.

Maybe the people heading CAM don't want to leave a lasting legacy behind that will last a hundred years. Maybe, they just want to make the most for themselves during the time they are on planet earth... CAM is certainly not going to sink in time for them to not achieve the latter...

Somebody please decode the term "Friendly Exit", it leave ample scope for reading between the lines.

So many "Friendly Exits" from CAM leaves one suspicioius.

Any exit w/o blowing a raspberry at Cyril or the purple elephant qualifies as thus.

sad to see a venerable institution trolled like this. Every place sees exits, some more some less - changes yoy. Majority of departures were related to performance issues, in Cam interest. Trolling should be for those asked to go. Without full facts easy to abuse free speech!

So what about his team in the hyderabad office? Are they joining his independent practice or leaving the firm?

It seems one of the two things:

1) Either CAM is intentionally culling the non-performing partners (but then, how do you explain Aswath's exit?) OR

2) They really have lost the plot on how to run an institution.

CAM's tendency to overlook the mistakes of the "loyal" ones, and stick it to the "performing" ones, is perhaps the cause of it's ongoing downfall. Because now they have only "loyalists" remaining and no "performers".

Maybe the comments somewhere else on the boards is true. They need a COO.

This Joseph guy's name seems to be coming up again and again. Maybe he's what they need. Maybe the need someone from outside. Whatever. But a COO is definitely needed.

Or more partners and staff are going to exit.

Bang on. While there are performer exits, CAM also has intentionally culled non-perming partners. [...] exits [...] are without doubt performance related.
