Madhurima Mukherjee, who had left Luthra & Luthra a year ago, has joined AZB & Partners in Delhi as a capital markets partner, according to several authoritative sources.
Mukherjee has been active in the Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA) scheme during her sabbatical.
She was not reachable for comment at the time of going to press.
Mukherjee’s husband Gautam Saha is a partner in AZB Delhi’s corporate team.
Update 17:35: AZB Delhi managing partner Ajay Bahl said in an email statement:
We are delighted to announce that Madhurima Mukherjee is joining us as a partner. The significant experience she brings will greatly supplement and value add to our existing team and provide additional impetus to this important practice area of capital markets at AZB.
The 1997-NLSIU Bangalore graduate had joined Luthra in 2006 to build up its capital markets practice after eight years at Amarchand Mangaldas Delhi.

Would be a laugh to see a law firm brought before the Competiton Commission for violating the law!
Not surprisingly again, Luthra's capital markets team is rocking so many deals lately..

Yea, right..no rush. So in the end it's all about a grubby anti-poaching pact (exactly a year since she quit Luthra). After all the photo shoots and the noise she made about IDIA, doing some guest teaching, etc. it seems it was all a ploy to remain in the "public eye" for the year she had to wait out. A cheap ploy I say. It's disappointing that people this senior also have such small minds. Why [try to] fool everyone? Just be honest and state that it's gardening leave.
Guess IDIA will advertise for another out-of-work lawyer soon who will probably make the usual crap statements about "wanting to change the world" and "give back to the needy children" while they apply for jobs and look around for openings.
Dont mean to offend any sensibilities but this sequence of events is just pathetic.
An acedemic belongs to acedemics, a practitioner belongs to his/ her practice and activist belongs to activism. To take a plunge into something else, if not for anything but a change in setting is perfectly acceptable and ought not to be commented upon, with such dismissive contempt. And, in the wise words of N Murthy, the founder of Infosys: Don't love your company. Love your job.
Madhurima, the way I see her to be:
A lawyers terms of employment or resignation from an organisation are understood to be confidential matters. And, even if she did decide to involve herself in some form of public service, while looking for a job, where's the harm? It is a sign of a socially aware and intelligent woman, deserving of the stature and praise she enjoys in society.
IDIA:
IDIA is being managed by a very capable lot who are dedicated to thier cause. If it serves it's purpose, it will thrive, with or without her. Being involved with IDIA, even if for a year, with her influence, is an endorsement which is worth a lot at many corridors which matter.
Quoting Street lawyer:
At HSA?
The practice of transactional law is as nuanced and requires as much skill as any other form of legal practice. To say otherwise is just without any knowledge of the realities of legal practice in today's world - for the last three decades.
Why would you say the level of intellectual inputs in structuring a complex transaction or providing the requisite rights and remedies in a transaction document any less challenging than formulating arguments in any court case?
What line of the law do you work on anyway? I am very interested in knowing.
Still no answer in what great intellectually stimulating work you engage in.
Anyway, based on your knowledge of the law, obviously the above will sound like greek to you. Haha. Cheerio old chap. This was fun.
I would like to contribute by saying that despite my humble background in law (am from ILS) transactional law has made me fully realise my potential which I would not have if I was a litigating lawyer. Instead of carrying my senior's bag, today I am in one of the best law forms in the country working with stalwarts like Shamik and Kalpana and doing big and small works for them and with bit of god luck will become a salraried partner soon. I am also an expert in many matters like loans. Is this possible in a litigation scenario? If you have answer than give otherwise dont misleed plz.
Best Regards,
P.S: I am not suggesting that 'transaction consultants / lawyers' require any higher skill.
We can predict that the competition heating up - between Yash, Manan (both her protégés) and Madhurima. Lets see who wins!
How is that possible? Bhatta's package at Khaitan is 3 cr a year. So is Madhurima less competent than Bhatta (who in all fairness is a stellar NUS lawyer)
