Mahindra bags RIL petrol head Naveen Raju as group GC

Raju: Steps up
Raju: Steps up

Reliance Industries (RIL) exploration & production head legal, Naveen Raju, has joined Mahindra & Mahindra as its new group general counsel (GC).

Raju will be overseeing an existing legal team of 24, reporting directly to Mahindra’s executive vice president and managing partner of the Mahindra Partners Division.

Raju confirmed his joining Mahindra but declined to comment further.

Nirmala Gill was his predecessor in the role at Mahindra.

Raju graduated from NLSIU Bangalore in 1996 and worked in-house at ACC and Crompton Greaves until 2000, when he joined Reliance, where he climbed to head legal rank, reporting to the group GC.

Reliance’s exploration and production unit includes much of the conglomerate’s petroleum and refining business, including the KG-D6 basin, which saw a $20bn joint venture with BP in 2011.

They make a lot! But no where close to a Partner of a top tier law firm of equal number of years experience

Yeah but life at a law firm, especially for a partner is tough... got to keep getting clients, always on the look out for new business.
But how much? 19 Nov 2014, 17:00

That is a generalisation. I can't tell how much a partner at a top tier law firm makes on average. Can you? Can anyone with certainty?

Most large companies like Infosys, ITC, Reliance etc would pay them somewhere in the 2-3 cr PA range. Some like ITC pay them the same as members of the Executive Board. Of course the real money lies in the ESOPs. Tracking the disclosures filed with Stock Exchanges by GCs can reveal a lot.

Congrats Naveen, wish you all the best..

Naveen was an expert oil and gas lawyer who has worked on stupendous oil and gas projects being implemented by RIL over many many years. ... a big big loss to the small band of Indian corporate lawyers who specialize in the oil and gas sector... All the best again in your new journey...

Arguably the best oil & gas transactional and disputes resolution lawyer India ever had. It is amazing how he led his team at Reliance. A thorough gentleman. Best wishes Naveen!

What will Mahindra do with an expensive oil and gas expert? Maybe they are thinking of expanding into the oil and gas space business-wise? Presuming MNC-types may better and RIL all said and done is a better house than Mahindra to head up. Wondering.

Well he is a great GC material - I reckon next we will be hearing is that he is heading up one of the major global MNCs. Truly a great leader. Good luck NR!

Good question. Why would Mahindra want to hire an oil and gas expert, expensive or not? More importantly, why would an oil and gas expert want to join M&M which has neither oil nor gas?
