IBM’s Kapil Chaudhary mans Autodesk As GC, as Mekhla Basu moves IBM

IBM Singapore-based counsel of its services integration hub Kapil Chaudhary joined Autodesk as its India and SAARC general counsel, replacing Mekhla Basu who joined IBM.

The Delhi University Law Faculty 2000 alumnus Chaudhary began his career at Fox Mandal and trained at Watson Farley & Williams Singapore before moving in house as assistant vice president, legal at Star News, legal counsel for India & Bangladesh at Schlumberger.

He then joined IBM as lead counsel for the global business services (GBS) vertical at IBM India / South Asia and the only counsel at IBM’s services integration hub in Singapore.

Chaudhary joins the $2.5bn NASDAQ-listed 3-D design and engineering software company, at a time when it is transitioning from perpetual licenses to a subscription-based model to deal with piracy and to provide greater flexibility to customers.

He commented: “With India becoming a start-up hub, there is a lot of recognition around issues like a high rate of software piracy which can lead also to data security risks as well potentially slow down further innovation.”

He added that Autodesk is also working with companies that help reduce piracy.

Chaudhary explained that he is based in India and reports to Autodesk’s Asia Pacific general counsel, to provide legal solutions to Autodesk India’s managing director Pradeep Nair and his divisions’ “verticals”.

His role includes advising on licensing, transaction and intellectual property, advising teams on marketing, sales, compliance and employment matters.

“As lawyers, one has to be very conscious about what role technology is playing in our lives while being mindful of applicable laws. This makes our jobs more exciting as we are constantly learning and adding value,” he said.

The earlier published version of this story incorrectly stated Chaudhary’s job title at IBM. This has now been corrected.
