Cipla global general counsel (GC) and former Khaitan & Co partner Murali Neelakantan, has resigned in order to focus on a variety of policy, education and other projects, while also set to become an independent director of a former long-standing client.
Neelakantan confirmed that he had left Cipla on 4 February and said: “This is a stage in my life that’s finished and there’s policy and strategy and teaching and things like that I’d like to focus on.”
“I’ve been teaching for the past few years on and off, and I’d like to do this more consistently,” he said, adding that he was currently involved in running a pharma policy programme at Ashoka University.
According to a BSE announcement, kitchen appliance maker TTK Prestige’s board has recommended to include Neelakantan as an independent director, which remains subject to shareholder approval later this month.
He said he was looking forward to this and other similarly strategic roles in future.
Neelakantan graduated from NLSIU Bangalore in 1996 when he began working at Nishith Desai Associates, moved to London in 1999 with Simmons & Simmons, joined Arnold & Porter in 2005 as a partner followed by Ashurst in 2007 as head of its India practice. In 2008 he returned to India with Khaitan & Co.
Cipla had in late November hired former Infosys deputy legal head Gautam Rohidekar as chief legal officer in India, with IBM general counsel Gopi Krishnan having replaced Krishnan at Infosys as deputy general counsel, reported Bar & Bench.

Kian- maybe an article on this?
GC of Cipla used to get anywhere between 5 cr to 6cr + perks.
A law firm partner for some XYZ and Partners (read not so known law firm) may get very less amount.
In my experience, an AMSS partner in his/her first year of partnership earns 65 to 70 Lakhs and it keeps on increasing once you rise the ladder. If you become equity partner at AMSS you take 3 cr to 4 cr per year. I think this hold true for other tier 1 firms as well.
Life as a GC is equally hectic. There is no pressure of getting the work (so as to feed the Associates with work and pat their salaries etc), but to get the work done. A company is a planet in itself. A GC has to be on top of every affair from M&A to Capital Markets to consumer disputes to sexual harassment proceeding to fraud and corruption. The list is endless.
Max 2 crores........ and no where near a top law firm partner of equal experience
I would not put a cap of Rs. 2 cr or something like that. It totally depends on various factors. Many GC's are into board of directors of the company and their subsidiaries. They are in governing position. Look at the case of Atul Dayal of Reliance Industries. He is at present (and since many years now)top 10 persons of Reliance group. He takes salary/bonus/perks etc etc of more than Rs. 20 cr per year.
Whine much?
RIP, English.
.:';!?& put any one or more to a sentence - is that your be all and end all of your life?
