Breaking: The next All India Bar Exam (AIBE) would be held on 25 November 2012, announced the Bar Council of India (BCI) today.

The BCI secretary published a notification on the body’s website, stating:

It is notified that the Bar Council of India is holding next All India Bar Examination on Sunday, 25th November, 2012. Other details will be notified soon.

In late August the BCI announced that the bar exam, initially hoped to be held in the first half of 2012, would be delayed to take place in October or November.

The delays caused in part by the regulator tendering the contract to assist it with the AIBE to a third party organisation.

BCI chairman Manan Mishra told Legally India that “there was no chance” that the previous AIBE contractor, Rainmaker, would conduct the exam.

However, while waiting for the exam, graduates would be allowed to practice providing they entered into an undertaking to pass the exam later.

At the time of going to press Mishra was unable to comment further because he was in a meeting.

How can he exclude a service provider from the tendering process? Isn't that, like, illegal?

Excluding the company that helped develop the exam? Curious. Holding the exam five months after the announced date? Priceless.

This bar exam seems to be a futile exercise. Should be scrapped.

OK, so, suddenly the "notification" disappeared from the home page of BCI (barcouncilofindia.org). You can still get to it by clicking on the link in the article on LI, but the actual notification, which was under the "All India Bar Examination Update" section of the BCI home page, no longer exists. Great!! Another one of those "oops we pushed the trigger too fast on this" moments at BCI? Is the exam still being held in November??? Please, Kian, some investigation is warranted here.

The notification suddenly re-appears as Item # 1. This is officially more mysterious than pulp fiction.

Geez, Kian. Could you have someone pick up the phone and call the Bar Council for comment on why they removed the exam date announcement from the web site? If they refuse to comment, report their "no comment" or "the Bar Council did not respond to attempts to reach them for comment." You're releasing press releases for firms no one has ever or will ever hear from again, yet you can't deploy a reporter to make a call and do a two-line update on an issue facing thousands of newly admitted lawyers. It's this kind of obvious lapse that diminishes your newsgatheringn credentials. If you need help, crowd-source the story by asking readers to call the Bar Council AIBE help line and report their experiences. Really, just do.....something.
