Wadia Ghandy defends 2011 Mumbai cricket cup after lady luck frowns on ELP

For the second year in a row Wadia Ghandy won the 2011 Mumbai ELP Masters Cricket Cup last weekend, besting Nishith Desai Associates (NDA) in the finals after Economic Laws Practice (ELP) was foiled by the flip of a coin in the semi-finals.

NDA had laid down 45-odd runs in the six over-six ball innings, which Wadia Ghandy managed to chase within the third over to claim the trophy.

Wadia Ghandy’s Kunal Dwarkadas was crowned man of the tournament, while ELP’s Kirat Damani won the accolades of the tournament’s best batsman and ELP’s Vishal Kulkarni won the best bowler.

ELP had lost to NDA in a semi-final of five five-ball overs where in the end all came down to the toss of a coin. Both teams were tied at 67 runs after five overs so a bowl-out of six balls each was played after which the teams were still tied. After three further balls, both teams were still tied so the tournament director had to take an executive decision late on Sunday evening and chose to let luck decide the finalist.

A coin was tossed for the win, with the first throw apparently going to ELP but having been declared invalid by the tournament director because it touched his foot. In the second toss, NDA won.

In the second semi-final Wadia Ghandy trounced DSK Legal successfully chasing 68 runs, ensuring Wadia’s ultimate win.

In the earlier evening match between senior counsels and law firm lawyers, the senior counsel proved surprisingly nimble and skilful, leaving the non-arguing lawyers no chance of winning.

Last year ELP lost to Wadia Ghandy in the finals.

ELP associate partner Sanjay Notani, who helped organise the tournament, said that ELP’s loss of the coin toss against NDA was unfortunate but added: “Whatever the tournament director decides we need to respect. Next year we’ll try to put rules in place [for such an eventuality] so there is not too much stress on the tournament director.”

He noted that it was a great three-day event attended by 16 law firms and would definitely be held again next year.

Almost every comment above misses the point.

Organizing such events demonstrates the maturity of the partners at ELP, and I am not aware of another parallel measure of promoting inter-firm and intra-profession camaraderie and friendship, in Bombay.

One can only hope that lawyers learn to genuinely take joy at others' happiness.

Great work by ELP here. Despite the other niceties being mentioned, I guess someone should have noted the commentator for non stop hindi blabbering, which was hillarious and in great sporot. The NDA cheer team, All was indeed well with them, the other ELP opener, left handed who had an amazingly (stylish) tournament and spare a thought for the above 40 players who really put up an amazing show!! great work guys!

i completely agree with #9. The wadia cheering squad was amazing too. This year the tournament definitely threw up some surprises in the form of upcoming new stars (like the ELP new opener and KD from Wadia). so lets just appreciate the good things the tournament gave us and the wonderful time ELP organised for us. We have a lot to thank them for! Well done ELP.

Who is this new ELP opener? Last time I heard Rohan Shah used to open the innings for them and never used to run his singles. Feeling bad for him. But age and experience has to give way to talent. Kudos to the new ELP talent. Too bad they did not make it to the semis to meet the champs. KD always has been a great representative of the Wadia Team.I also heard he has quit Wadia? Is the news true? With the departure of Sagar and now KD next year would be a difficult task for them since they are only left with a Amit now.

The new left handed opener cf ELP is the revelation of the season!Had the gift of the Cricketing Gods to say the least!!Style personified with the grit and aggresion which reminded of the great Adam Gilchrist! The tournament was a great success as far as competitive cricket is concerned and KUDOS to team ELP for the successful completion of such a wonderful event.

#11 actually wadia has a lot of other talent (new and old) to give tough competition next year too. Though i am sure wadia will miss KD and Sagar, Amit has a brilliant team to support him. Brilliant bowlers in their team.

I heard his name is Majid Siddique, ex NUJS and AMSS.. Apparently he bowls a lethal line too.. Way to go man!! ELP might not call Kiran next year @ rate Majid's taking over..

Oh I so knew it had to be him, it would be an honour to bowl to him someday in a match:-) way to go Majid. Its Kirat btw not Kiran.. And for that to happen Majid needs to learn to win tosses!!
