Delhi based lawyer Abhay Vohra, who went independent from big law firms a year ago, advised CL Educate on acquiring 51 percent stake in education consulting company Accendre Knowledge Management, which was advised by its in-house legal team.

CL Educate is best known for its test prep brand Career Launcher and Accendre helps universities and colleges improve their academic standing.

CL Educate started off in 1996 as a provider of MBA test preparation courses and made three acquisitions in 2010-11 - Threesixtyone Degree Minds Consulting, Compassbox.com and GK Publications, reported VC Circle. In April this year it deferred its proposed initial public offer for which it had filed the documents in September 2014.

Vohra told Legally India that he had previously advised another Delhi-based client in acquiring stake in Accendere, earlier, and this client had referred him to CL Educate.

The Luthra & Luthra and J Sagar Associates (JSA) alumnus Vohra, who graduated from NUJS Kolkata in 2010, said that independent practice was “a very challenging experience”.

“It’s been tough, when you’re drawing the package and you suddenly drop down to 10% of the package,” he noted when asked about what it was like initially starting out.

He said that his practice currently consisted of himself and two full-time juniors, with one other lawyer also assisting on projects part-time.
