According to data provider mergermarket’s latest league table, AZB & Partners was the busiest M&A law firm with 38 deals to its credit in the first half of 2010, followed by Amarchand Mangaldas and Desai & Diwanji in second and third places respectively, with a total of 14 deals each.

Trilegal and Khaitan & Co were the other two domestic law firms placed amongst the top five M&A dealmakers of 2010 H1. Trilegal acted on seven while Khaitan notched up six deals in this period.

By volumes of deals, Linklaters and Allen & Overy (A&O) were the only two international firms which found their way into the top ten, according to mergermarket.

A&O made its mark by scaling up its ranking to sixth by volume in H1 2010 after advising on five deals of a combined deal size of $12.6bn.

Ranked seventh by volume, Linklaters was the other international law firm that made it to the top ten rankings with three deals worth $12.2bn.

However, international firms’ deal values were higher than most other domestic rivals, with 10 international law firms in the top 15 ranks by value according to mergermarket data, despite seven of them having acted on only one transaction.

By volume, Luthra & Luthra, J Sagar Associates (JSA) and Nishith Desai Associates have been ranked eighth, ninth and tenth for their three deals each with total values of $3.8bn, $201m and $161m respectively.

Luthra had a role in one of the single biggest deal ($3.7bn) in this period, advising Abbot Laboratories in the acquisition of Piramal Healthcare Solutions whose domestic legal counsel was Crawford Bayley.

Also, four other firms - Crawford Bayley, Baker & McKenzie, Vinson & Elkins and Dua Associates breakaway firm Tatva Legal figured on mergermarket’s list of top legal advisors to Indian M&A this year for acting on two transactions each.

Assessments based on deal value of the Indian M&A deals by mergermarket also rank AZB (total $16.7bn) as the top Indian firm, followed by other domestic firms such as Talwar Thakore Associates ($10.7bn), Crawford Bayley ($ 4.8bn), Amarchand Mangaldas ($ 4.7bn) and Luthra & Luthra ($3.8bn).

The involvement of foreign law firms is violative of the advocates act.

What seems strange is that it wasn't even in the top 3 last year and this year thus far AZB has topped all the league tables. It has some 50 odd deals to its credit in another publication report. What is it that AZB is doing right which others are not? It can not be that they are doing all the deals alone in the market. There is something definitely more than meets the eye.

It's a fair observation. Essentially, because most M&A is private very rarely do the legal advisers get disclosed.

In a nutshell such league table data providers therefore have to tally up information reported on sites such as Legally India, in addition to information on deals sent directly by law firms to the data provider, as well as the data provider's own research.

Therefore, efforts by a firm to increase the data they publicly disseminate on deals will likely have an effect on rankings. Conversely, some law firms that disseminate very little deal information will be lower down in the rankings.

Furthermore, many clients only rarely give consent for a law firm to officially confirm that it is instructed, leaving large gaps in the data.

We accept it is not perfect but at the moment this is the best information available.

For law firms that are under-represented, we would request for you to send us and mergermarket your M&A deals more regularly so they get picked up in future league tables and more accurately reflect the work levels at firms.

Kian, you are right! In fact, another large firm based in Noida has already done 69 deals in this year but has forgotten to report them!

Is there some difference between various reports. Venture Intelligence has a different set of rankings separately for PE and m&A.

"What is it that AZB is doing right which others are not?" - AZB has tied up with Clifford Chance !!!

@6 - I believe the Venture Intelligence M&A and PE league table were just released.

Have a look:
http://ventureintelligence.in/league.htm
http://ventureintelligence.in/leaguelaw-ma.htm

However, Amarchand for example seems to not feature at all in that one.

No league table is perfect but as far as I have found, mergermarkets' is currently the best one available.

Kian

I had a chance to speak with the people from Venture Intelligence myself..seems that amarchand will feature either in the q3 update or the eoy league table.
