PS: And for a lawyer, you are remarkably cavalier with your terminology! Anyone with half a brain (and trust me, many British do not have half a brain, but even they!) would know that there is a difference between "trainee solicitor" and "associate"!

They might ask you about the discrepency in your transcript dates when you submit your transcript with your application. Plus, you can't stop whoever is writing your reference letters from telling them (though I hope nobody would do something dickish like that) (and this assumes that a prof (or multiple profs, as the case may be, depending on how many references the uni you are applying to require) would be willing to put their names on the line for a student who had failed multiple undergraduate exams). If your failure was due to extenuating personal circumstances, you should explain these in your SoP and to your profs at your current uni, too.

Even if we leave aside the question of admission, especially considering the favourable policy of your university, there's still the question of actually doing the master's. Would personally advise against it in your case. If you are struggling academically at undergrad itself, you are likely to struggle even more at the postgraduate level, too. Common sense. Advanced modules, tougher academic load etc. And failing in the UK can have some real shit consequences for your life. They are not at all forgiving in their transcript issuing policies, so if you fail a module there, it will follow you around forever. Their unis tend to have a policy where they will allow you to resit a failed exam, but they will cap the marks in the module to the minimum pass mark of the university regulations - 50% in some places, perhaps 40% in some others. I have been to a UK uni myself, so I know this from reading their regulations. What that means is that even if you do well in the resit assessment, they will input your marks on your transcript as 50% (assuming, for the sake of argument, that that's the minimum pass mark of whichever uni you get into). Something like that will destroy your life forever, even if you do get admitted - have seen the consequences of such a thing in the case of a friend of mine.

Obviously, they won't react so harshly if you have extenuating circumstances (something like illness, death in the family etc). In such a case, they will make you take the exam at the next available opportunity and count it as a 'first sit' (i.e., they won't cap your marks to the minimum pass). But that could still make things hard for you because of visa time limits.

Just basing this on what I see. In general, it’s easier for women to get married in India than men, because of the historically skewed sex ratio in India. But I see so many women lawyers in their late 30s and early 40s who never married and will very likely be single lifelong. Many of these women are pretty successful, having reached partner and general counsel level, or having a good income from litigation. I wonder if the number of similar women in professions like IT, banking, medicine, etc are much lower?

While the necessity to justify one's salary is a part of any law firm, a partner with a big book may just keep another with the firm, for servicing the clients, even if they do not bring in work. Although this set up usually means that the non-client-bringing partner is only good for the knowledge and skills they possess, which may be replaced by another resource.

Historically, the place where JGLS students have sex is behind the helipad, literally on the grass. Been happening for years and years, ever since the first batch. That’s very incorrect. They have a very specialised structured finance and debt capital markets practice. Lots of cross border work, private credit fund work and exposure to T1 international banking and finance teams. Several associates have transitioned to Singapore and London law firms after working with them.

Certain health issues prevented me from giving my best in CLAT and SLAT.

I may get a tier 3 at best, and I currently have Symbi Nagpur in my hands. I was also considering NMIMS through their entrance test.

Not sure there is any T-1 Partner who will do this. But to answer your question - colonialism - living abroad seems far better than living in India for many upper-mid class Indians. All the great politicians, businessmen and philanthropists who preach about the virtues of India send their kids abroad for education.

I want to share my experience working at a so-called pan India law firm with ▮▮▮ offices. I joined one of the branches with high expectations, despite a modest salary hike, as I was promised a review in three months. However, after waiting seven months, I received only a 10% increase.

Things took a turn when I was transferred to another city as "in-charge," but with a salary on par with a Tier 3 firm. My responsibilities quickly grew to include billing, client acquisition, liaising with police stations, and working with local advocates – far beyond my original role.

The partners were unfortunately of little help. They lacked legal knowledge, provided no guidance, and were disconnected from the day-to-day work. Instead of focusing on firm growth, I was under constant pressure to secure clients, go to different police stations, and liaise with them to handle bail matters. I was regularly humiliated in calls, with accusations that I wasn’t doing enough.

On top of this, the partners would often make personal and sexually colored remarks, brushing them off as "jokes." Further, when I asked for the partners to visit our branch, I was told to arrange client meetings myself, with no further support. The firm also had a habit of delaying salaries, withholding expenses, and stalling reimbursements for months.

After enduring this for over 2.5 years, I resigned, even though I had no job lined up. I’ve been interviewing since but haven’t yet found a firm that feels like a better fit.

My advice to anyone considering joining a firm like this: Please, do your due diligence. Conduct proper background checks, speak with former employees, and understand the culture before you commit. These firms are like leeches – they will suck your blood and leave you with nothing.

There's never been this requirement in the last decade and a half - the founders usually have a big rolodex and plenty to go around - they're all hiring to service clients. Designations and profit shares are tools to keep the good "resources" around.

Its apparent with all the complaints of toxicity at the workplace that people skills are rare - this reflects in the bringing in of business as well.

Just an update on this, while 6lpa may be enough to survive in Mumbai, it is nowhere near enough to live.

While I agree that there are a lot of people who earn way less than 6lpa and survive in Mumbai, there is no doubt that it is still a hard way to live.

I am an associate who earns 6lpa right now, and here’s a break-down for anyone who is interested:

Renting:

A 2bhk flat in a location like Andheri (flat condition being suitable) costs a total of around 60-70k (you can get cheaper flats in the range of 50-60k for sure, but the conditions of those be a heavy compromise)

So, even taking a lower estimate of 60k, and say you share it with 3 other people (which is sometimes a problem in itself), your rent would come out to be 15k.

Food:

This is major consideration and you end up spending more than you think. Cooks take a minimum of 2k per person (monthly) for cooking one meal a day, however if you want two meals, they settle around 3-3.5k per person (monthly).

Lets assume you settle for the one meal option, that 2k, then you add groceries, which would be around 2-2.5k per person. So that’s a total of 4.5k.

For your other meal, you can get a tiffin service for lunch or step down from your office to eat, either will cost you a minimum of 3k a month.

So food comes to a total of 7.5k. (don’t hate me, its just my experience)

Utilities:

Electricity, gas (lucky if you get a pipeline connection), wifi, other stuff you may require for functioning (soap etc.) amounts to yet another of 3k a month, its better to assume that it would be around 4-5k depending on your actual expenses (electricity bills are way higher in summers/monsoons)

So for utilities, it’s a total of 4k.

Transport:

Locals, metros are cheap, and so are autos and cabs (if you have to take for short distances or sharing basis).

A fair total for your transport needs would be 2k.

That’s your basic survival stuff accounted for, which comes to a total of 15k+7.5k+4k+2k = 28.5k

That’s the bare minimum, and sadly I have never achieved that. My expenses (minus the money spent on fun stuff) has always been around 32-34k, because you always end up needing to spend on one thing or the other.

Even so, getting 45k in hand, and limiting your expenses to 32-34k leaves you with a solid 11-13k in hand for saving, or spending (your choice)

Conclusion:

6lpa is a good base to survive, but as you grow, so do your expenses (remember that 32-34k figure I gave, its 44-45k now for me). So while you’ll be fine with 45k initially, you’ll soon want another 15-20k, but that’s all up to you. I have less, and that makes me want to push for more rather than tone down my lifestyle and investments, but some may tone down their lifestyles and save more.

If you share a room, you’ll want your own space, which means your own room, which means double the rent.

I am a very average student in amity. Fourth year. barely good internships. i am trying very hard to get whatever internship i can, for this summer, so that i can at least show i did something. i have won a moot. presented 1 paper. interested in general corporate, banking and ipr even. how to reach t2 firm at least by the end of next year.

These are the words of someone young and progressive who has yet to see the real world. Mental health is important, but so is a strong sense of self awareness and accountability. In each of these tragic posts about a suicide we see so many comments that attribute guilt and liability to external stakeholders with not a single thought spared to how the student community, their friend circles and the individual themselves can take accountability.

If anyone can help - would there be an experience cut if I move from a tech policy to a TMT team (not policy team) of a tier 1 law firm? Has anyone made that move? I have 3 year PQE in tech policy. I am a student at a mid-tier NLU and I wish to apply for a Master’s degree abroad, specifically in the UK. The only concern I have is that I’ve had three backlogs — two in the 4th semester and one in the 6th semester.

That said, I have a fairly strong profile overall: I’ve participated in and won various competitions and moots, interned at Tier-1 law firms as well as reputed chambers, completed a policy internship abroad, and published multiple blogs and papers.

My main concern is whether these backlogs will significantly affect my chances of getting into a good master’s program. As far as I know, my university transcript does not explicitly mention reappears or retests. Instead, it just updates the date of passing. For example, if I failed a 6th semester paper in 2024 but cleared it in 2025, then the entire 6th semester would be shown as passed in 2025 on my transcript — alongside the 8th semester, which I would also pass in 2025.

Could you please advise me on how this might impact my application? I am very tensed.

Can you get a job by converting an Internship? Yes.

Will NMIMS get you tier-1 Internships? A decent few through campus.

Most will come down to if you have enough connections to get a few internships to pad your cv for when these placement cells internships come because they are not as vast in number as an NLU.

the a0 pay does not include half the year in computing your bonus (since it's a probation period), and the a1 pay is the same band as your a0 pay, just this time you will actually receive a full year's bonus.

So in our uni, sneaking in to a girls hostel leads to direct debarment and a girl sneaking into a guys hostel leads to the caretakers saying Fuck off, vaapis mat aana. So really dependant on your punishment. And trust me, you do not want a random guy moving around a corridor where girls think that it is their safe space. But again, you can argue from either side here

We went for the AOS course to Jindal recently and we realised that these Jindal folks really don't appreciate what they have. Their mess and their freedoms are much more compared to what we have. We have so much academic burden, that we are okay with hand holding, hugs and making out. But they all want to take it a step forward.

Now leaving campus without permission until a said hour makes sense because at the end of the day you are in a random small town in Haryana, I would not want to go out at night at all. Plus Jindal has had many tragedies like the car accident, and the rape case and the very aspect that it can happen justifies these calls.

Guys be grateful. Sex is great but the uni is not going to help you have it.
