Hi OP, I recently got over with my 5 years of law school. So here’s what I think about this, a laptop is sine qua non, you would need it for everything, from making notes, using SCC/Manupatra to drafting research papers/memos and most importantly during internships.

A tablet or an iPad for that matter is a mere convenience, it’s much handy and better for reading, annotating or even taking notes but it can’t replace the utility of a laptop.

I’d suggest you go ahead with a laptop right now and eventually you may buy a tablet.

I work with a partner who has Zero reported judgments in last 2-3 years and has been awarded as a litigation star. Does mostly low value consumer litigation work and has been awarded for (?)... There are far better lawyers doing actual C litigation who have not been given the title of being a "litigation star".
I mean what are the parameters for selection?

Do these awards hold any sanctity?

What part of a firm's budget do firms allocate for these titles?

I have been looking for a job as fresher at a law firm or at a good chamber but nothing seems to work out. The fear is just killing me. Is it just about the field or I am just not ready or whatever. I fucked up in an interview, though the person was kind ennough to give me another chance. Can anyone let me know about the firms or partners who are ready to take non-NLU students at the firm. Or can you suggest me good chambers to join.

this insanity with rotation is ruining the lives of aspirants, when clat started we needed to build trsut by allowing the finances to be checked by diff nlus, but now with almost 15 years of experience it is time for some stability, there can be revenue sharing without sharing responsibilites.

3. Even if you reject the advice that has been given to you, at the very least reflect on your rudeness, as demonstrated above. Thats not true. He tried to leave with NLSAT and look at the mess that ended up in. NLUD didnt ever join the consortium. NLS has always belonged to it, theyre not equally placed. Trying to leave CLAT consortium would mean Sudhir would be hauled up in court so fast and called a hitler so many times it would likely not result in any gains and cause a lot of pain thats not worth it. His personality or connections do not give Sudhir superpowers. NLS cannot reasonably leave the clat consortium.

He might have taken some decisions within his role in the consortium, but it would have to be proven that he took this one at all.

Is that how small your world is? Who told you that people- any people are not capable of self improvement? Why apply to attend university if you dont think theres room for self improvement? I have several gay/ lesbian/ disabled/ dalit friends- they would be horrified at this kind of talk. It would be anathema to them to suppose that because of their identity they were either incapable of self improvement or that they shouldnt be invested in self improvement. Gay/ lesbian/disabled whatever you are still allowed to be an entire person. And youre allowed to have all the interests of an entire person. Anyone who seeks to diminish your world to identity politics has ill served you indeed. And because And it's because youre an entire person that you have flaws that you work on. I had to work on consistency and being self driven when I was in law school. Others had to work on their confidence or on more mundane skills like writing and reading and analysis. Thats what law school is for. To improve things about yourself. If you have a "what is there to improve" mindset- you would likely hate it.

You seem to be changing your story a bit. I thought the score your "friend" got did not qualify her for NLS. It might have but it did not. So close but no cigar. My roommate was one such person- came from bangalore almost got into NLS and then fell one rank short. She just dealt with the disappointment and went to NALSAR instead, and she did great in life.

Of course I'm comparing like people alike. I do not think having a DSD makes you lesser or greater than someone who does have a DSD. Do you think people should be treated differently based on sex characteristics? Do you not want equality? Do you want sacred caste status instead? And intersex is such a broad category to start with. Some people think PCOS, hirsutism, or a micropenis are intersex conditions. If you ask me those people can and do want to just go about their lives without identifying as " most persecuted and marginalised members of society."

Its not fear - if you have information and the client just forwards what they provided you previously it demonstrates how you have not paid attention to emails, which is your one job. Therefore you look at asking only for information not provided previously to avoid the impression of being someone that open and review all emails and their attachments.

hey man that sounds pretty difficult, ik its cliche to say this but the night is at its darkest before sunrise. pls dont give up. See, it's a numbers game at the end of the day. Make a list of everything you've done so far in law & then write them next to what field of law you think you are interested in. Now after you've narrowed down what you're interested in, everything you've worked on so far would help you in identifying what you can contribute in a firm/chamber/office. Congratulations you're prepped for interview now.

Now what do I mean by it being a numbers game. There are 100s of firms/chambers out there, cold mail 5-10 a day, drop them a text on linkeding, engage with their law articles if they've written any, volunteer to be a research assistant for them, see if you can land a job after. Keep Cold mailing, I'd say walking into offices is also great. At the end of the day even if you get rejected by everyone for 10 days, you've already cold-mailed/talked to a 100 people, you're immune to rejections now and you're much more confident because you can now recognise patterns in these conversations. Now, you only need one person to say yes. That's all its gonna take. You are feeling bad about your situation anyway, might as well do something out of it. Go right on, and best of luck!!

The least we can as law students do is take a stand and fight for something that is right then just normalising the situation or making comparisons. It's a shame that MNLU Mumbai students don't even have voice (guts) to represent their issues before their Chancellor. I was in internship with one MNLU Mumbai Student, he said there is a division between Maharashtra students and others. Just see they are using you all to fill their pockets and live a levishing life, no matter you are from Maharashtra or other state. The least you can do it take stand for fees you are paying from hard earned money of your parents. I don't think they worked their whole life to see you just cribbing about issues and not take a united front when you have all the support.

Friday casual definitely a myth in JSA. Dress code policy changes over night and mandating colour of the socks, no sneakers etc through the policy is least of concern because of written rules like knee length skirt and no sleeveless allowed for women. Very problematic.

Some team’s partner wear sneakers or jeans on Friday which is okay, another team wears becomes a problem. Admin head keeps roaming around like a principal and very problematic and unwarranted comments. Orthodox policy and not in line with the top firms or in vogue with several of its clients.

Today in Sem 2 paper, the most negligent think that could happen, did happen. We were given paper to write and after 1 hr 45 mins then the teacher comes in saying MU has changed the paper stop writing you will have to write again. Is this something to tolerate ?? We had to write the entire paper again for a different question paper. It is so stupid for us students to study and show up and have exams back to back when the university or college just do not take things seriously enough. This happened only in one-two colleges as far as I know. GLC being GLC didnt face this issue. Writing two papers for the same subject on the same day is something I ve never even heard of. Is this normal in MU ?

As I understand it, there are T1, T2, T3 firms, etc. So, when someone moves from a T2 to a T1 firm, they often take a salary cut (I assume), and their prior work experience may also be discounted. What happens in the case of someone moving from a Big 4 firm to a T1 law firm? Does the Big 4 fall into any particular tier or category? Would an associate with 2 years of PQE at a Big 4 earn the same salary as an associate with equivalent experience at a T1 firm?

I am from a Tier 2 NLU and within Top 5 of my batch. I also have decent 4-5 tier 1 internships in my CV. I have worked there but i am not getting confidence whether I really know how to do work. I am not very great at doing work. Is it possible for me getting hired in Tier 1 law firm ? solely on the basis of my batch rank and past Tier 1 internship, even if i am not very good at doing work (but willing to learn work).

Public Universities are also horrendously mismanaged in this country, today whatever Public Educational Institutions are in India, they are thanks to the students they had over the years, the institute played a lesser role, and this is not an ideal scenario, while in JGLS for some reason, the school's really doing something to those who couldn't make it to an NLU.

I have around 6 months PQE in litigation. I have completed an LLM from a reputed university abroad in Dispute Resolution, with a focus on commercial and investment arbitration.

Due to a recent change in circumstances in my family, I suddenly have been burdened with significant financial responsibilities and have become the sole provider for my family. This has made securing a stable role a pressing need for me and I can join immediately.

I have been consistently applying to partners and to chambers through personalised cold emails and Linkedin messages, but nothing seems to be working out.

As a first generation lawyer with limited contacts, I’ve found it challenging to navigate opportunities. Please let me know if there are any openings in firms or with individuals and how I can approach them.

I got one diploma in patents law back in 2015 from NALSAR. It did help me in selection for inhouse roles as IP Counsels. Also, one could learn a lot from their contact classrooms which they used to be conducted at ILI Delhi, but i believe they have completely stopped these classroom sessions now. Moreover, you get to meet a lot of people who are already specialists or intend to specialized in certain field of law and are working professionals. Overall, its a pretty good bet.

I agree to your point that if one has the mettle, law offers avenues. I never say give me a job because of my gender,i won't have tried if I thought that way.I agree, when I say that my performance was comparable I don't base it on my view alone, I refer to being shortlisted to the next stage . Regarding shortlisting. I wasn't shortlisted in places where they were shortlisting and only in which they took everyone in. People below my rank were shortlisted and im not saying they shouldn't have been. I have seen visible discrimination happening and hence said what I did. Also regarding not keeping me in a seperate accommodation, I wasn't asking ideal things, it's legally mandated right of mine to be given a seperate accommodation so I'm not here to say oh the world should be an ideal better space. I'm just saying it was my legal right.

This is a common eyewash. Most of their students do intern in law firms, so it is not accurate to say that they don't want those jobs. Moreover, in the absence of stats, nobody should claim that majority do get placed. The facts say this much, in no batch has more than 20% been placed at all, let alone in tier one firms.
