The fact is that you will only get help from alumni and senior counsels who are aligned with the TMC’s main opponents, ie Left and BJP. You will have to get political about who you approach — like it or not. Only the reds and saffronites will come to your aid, simple as that.

Tier 1 has lower middle class crowd since they have to build everything from scratch (house, investment, lifestyle) since only Tier 1 pays for it and this crowd has grit and determination, they can withstand the grind. Of course there are exceptions at all levels but these few people get targeted and mocked all the time for “working hard despite belonging to well off families”. Tier 1 is for the masses. What should I do :(
I didn't get any acceptance for the winter internship(JAN-FEB), plus I want to pursue career in corporate preferably M&A or maybe something else. I'm very confused about what topics to explore what to do about all this I don't understand how to connect with people in this industry and I feel so unmotivated, everyone around me is bagging internships at either firms or under reputed AOR thru connections. Can Someone guide me a little, I feel very lost.

Not a surprise at all. Singhvi and Sibal are probably among the richest lawyers in the whole world. The other lawyers mentioned won’t charge more than a lakh or two per hearing. The rates by Aquilaw and Debanjan Mandal will be even lesser. Aquilaw isn’t even a proper firm in that sense: just an extension of the TMC’s legal cell.

In fact, I am surprised that Sibal and Singhvi’s share is 1/3. I would have thought it would have been 50% (although Mamata did gift Singhvi a Rajya Sabha seat from Bengal).

Hii, I am currently in 3rd semester of law in a 5year law degree from NFSU Delhi and I have a thought to leave this degree right here and go to UK and settle there restart with llb and then practice there but I don't know nothing kindly help. That's not true at all. Most lawyers (not just litigating but in law firms too) are not "middle class" at all. Dads were senior bureaucrats, politicians, CEOs/ VPs of companies etc. In fact, most kids who end up in law schools come from affluent/ 'upper upper' middle class families.

What do you expect when people from NLUs only want to join law firms? All the influential people in politics are from litigation. Its all dominated by TLCs mainly cuz they started their politics from there. NLUs are irrelevant when it comes to politics anð their politics are v different. This is not to say that any NLU grad would not dominate politics. They need to be in litigation to do the same. Locket Chatterjee is a good example. So long as NLUs keep churning law firm clerks, they'd never dominated in politics. Same reason why hardly any NLU grad is a judge today or a senior advocate.

Effectively the deal as I understand it from the movie was that the swaps were to be marked to market (similar to futures in the Indian stock market but not exactly) with both sides being required to post “margin” depending on which direction the swaps took. However, as the swaps were privately placed and not traded on an exchange, Michael Burry needed the banks to quote the price of the swaps in order to get paid out. The movie indicates that when the swaps were ITM, the banks didn’t quote till they palmed it off to someone else (in real life people like Iceland etc) in order to avoid taking a loss (except for that other hedge fund dude ka bank which did take a loss in the movie).

I have been working for around a year now and have gained decent exposure to general corporate transactions. I initially started with a boutique law firm and am currently working at a consulting firm. However, I am keen on transitioning towards a more focused practice in M&A, Private Equity, and Venture Capital.

Despite consistent efforts, I haven’t been able to secure an opportunity in this field yet. I would be grateful if anyone could share any suitable openings or guidance on how to effectively make a shift into this area. I am open to working with boutique firms as long as the work primarily involves M&A, PE, and VC transactions, with the eventual goal of moving towards a Tier-1 firm.

Here are where your points wouldn't make sense:

1. Join another firm - well, if someone is in a T1, and they can't grow, they'll have to move. They won't necessarily join another T1 again. So most would go to a lower tier firm, may become partner sooner. But money? Lesser. Again, no point doing it. Perhaps yes, you may get your name on the wall.

2-3. Your argument is incorrect. You are comparing a successful person in a law firm (otherwise everyone would become a salaried partner in 10-12 years) v. an average first gen litigator. In that comparison, yes, a law firm glorified clerk would win. But, we are comparing on equal footing - on people who are sucessful. Any litigator, regardless of whether first gen or not, if successful, in 10-12 years would not only be independent but also have juniors under them. And yes, maybe 1cr a year would be difficult, but surely it would be 50-70% of that. However, with 15 PQE, where a salaried partner may still remain one, the litigator would be outearning the partner. As for building a book, a litigator does it from day 1 (not counting the delhi based associate-junior system which is a mockery). So it ages like fine wine for a litigator. Not for a clerk who was only doing paperwork and now has to suddenly bring in corporate houses.

4-5. Fine, yes, I'll take it - job satisfaction means different to different people. To the glorified clerks in law firms, its surely a job in the legal profession. Their view and horizon are narrow. Second, as regards the work of a commercial litigator coming up only where a transactional lawyer fails - thats incorrect. Even if the transaction was airtight - if the parties violate it, a dispute arises which in most cases go to a litiagator- whether in arbitration or in courts.

6-7. Very, very incorrect. You think senior advocates are only those who come from generational wealth? They get cases because they got recommended? Right, so any tom, dick, or harry, irrespective of how good or bad they are, just because they are well connected, a MNC would entrust a billion dollar litigation to them

2. LNAT? There is still a lot that one can be critical of, as regards that: you don't give a benchmark of what kinds of scores you typically would want to see. And, unlike the British universities, you don't have a school board exams filter either, going with the 45% standard (as far as I remember) that other unis in India go with. Set the equivalent of an A Levels A* AA, which is a King's/UCL/LSE-kind of standard requirement, and the conversations will be very different among all but the most diehard haters (whose minds can anyway not be changed).

You will not accept that other than NLSIU because of its reputation, legacy and current active admin, no other NLU is doing well at this point. As for top three status, if you're relying upon NIRF, then take the shady perception score away and NUJS will easily be within top 3. It already outscored the other three in several parameters in the last NIRF. So your 'legitimate criticism' is often without any objectivity. NLUD is a shadow of its past self and NALSAR really isn't doing any better. NUJS gets the bad press owing to internal squabbles and trolls, that's all.

I agree with the broad assessment that the BJP is unlikely to win. The reason is simple and has been discussed in the media several times. The TMC gets almost 100% of the Muslim vote and between 10 to 25% of the Hindu vote. Plus ▮▮▮ and voter intimidation. This formula ensures an easy win for them. Although frequent exits are common in this practice area, Indus Transactions has witnessed a particularly high attrition rate over the past year. Hi all! Since I entered litigation, I never considered anything other than an AoR chamber (filing office) or a senior’s office. I’ve worked at both. But the going is tough. I wanted to know apart from the pay which may be slightly more, how is the work in itself different at pure litigation firms like Karanjawala, ALA?

There are also boutique dispute firms. I’m not able to make out the difference between chamber v litigation firms v dispute firms?

(Not including tier 1 firm disputes practice in this conversation)

I understand these firms don’t have a counsel practice as such, and are larger scale filing offices and act as solicitor firms? For example - do karanjawala partners appear in court ?

Apart from pay, how the is work, learning and eventual growth, benefits different? How to decide which one to pick?
