Wadia Ghandy won the top legal footballing trophy out of 24 Mumbai lawyer teams, defeating Kanga & Co in the finals, with newcomers MDP bagging the third-place shield.

Wadia Ghandy won the Chagla Cup against the previous year’s defending champions Kanga at the third edition of the annual tournament, which was organised by Hariani & Co. The competition concluded on Sunday 6 October.

MDP won the Bombay Gymkhana plate against Manilal Kher Ambalal, in a fight between the third and fourth-placed teams in the group stages that saw a total of 24 teams across six pools compete with each other on Saturday.

Participating teams were Kanga & Co, Solomon & Co, Hariani & Co, Bharucha & Partners, Trilegal, Mulla & Mulla, J Sagar Associates (JSA), DSK Legal, AZB & Partners, Wadia Ghandy, Amarchand Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co, Manilal Kher Ambalal, ALMT Legal, Luthra & Luthra, Desai & Diwanji, Nishith Desai Associates, Little & Co, Crawford Bayley, Rajani Associates, Economic Law Practice (ELP), and MDP. Junior and senior teams from the Bombay Bar Association (BBA) also participated.

MDP finished 13th not third... Top 12 teams play for Cup whereas bottom 12 teams play for Plate/Shield, please verify facts

The facts stated hereinabove are incorrect. Top 12 teams played for the cup whereas bottom 12 played for the plate. Technically MDP and MKA finished 13th and 14th and not 3rd and 4th .

I think MDP realistically should be said to be third in the competition. After the group rounds, two separate knock out competitions started, of which each had a cup/prize/shield at the end.

So either you say both won, or more realistically, MDP was third, or you say the shield was 13th place, which doesn't make sense either.

We'll amend the copy a little bit though on the rules of the knock-out competition to clarify.

No they shouldn't "realistically" be said to be third! They should be said to have won the second competition, which comprised of the bottom 12 teams. That's how cup and plate tournaments work, and saying they're third is a disservice to the semi-finalists of the cup tournament.

Saying the shield was the trophy for 13th place is appropriate, as is saying that both won separate knock out tournaments, the latter of which was only for the bottom 12 teams in the draw

Your logic is flawed. Lets imagine Wimbledon had a concept of the plate event. It would be like saying Mr. X who loses in the first round and thereafter wins the Plate stood third and the Fed who in his aging days lost in the Semi's to Djoko stood behind Mr. X. Furthermore who do you think would get paid more Mr. X or the Fed.

who is the Fed? Do you mean a Federal Agent? Like an FBI agent? As a lawyer you must always be clear when capitalizing a term. Please don't be so lose with your terms. Also, it is worth mentioning, this is a football tournament - no one understands your tennis references!

Positions actuly does nt matter. Wht matters is tht MDP is one of the 4 teams which accomplishd smthng whn they wer enjoyin the tournament.

Thr were teams which playd wel bt cud nt win. Others sweated like anythng bt dint play as many games as these 4 teams did.

MDP was the team against wch lowest goals wer scored. Most of Matchs MDP played had a deciding result nd dint go for draw (like many teams' games did) givin free points. Evry point of MDP was earnd.

Appreciation requires courage
and winning requires skills. MDP, kanga, wadia gandy and MKA hv done their part. :)

Boss, there is nothing wrong in praising MDP to win the second division (plate league). Its an achievement nevertheless and I am sure that MDP and all other teams played with a lot of enthusiasm. The comments section is only trying to put one fact correct, that MDP was not the third best team. That is all.
As you said, positions actually doesn't matter.

Sameway, league table positions, partnership positions, salary tables, etc. published from time to time by LI also doesn't matter. Some Firms may be amongst the top in the league table but have openly admitted that their profitability has taken a dive. Some law schools may not be on the top of mooting and placement tables, but may have produced great scholars. Tables/rankings/positions don't matter. End of the day, it should all boil down to "have you achieved what you planned and set out to achieve"? if so, then you will always be happy, no matter where you stand compared to your peers

With all due respect to MDP and Legally India, is this a paid article? Not only does their picture appear, but they are also declared third (?????). I don't know if last years tournament was reported, but no one declared JSA third last year..

Dude, Kian, you need to verify your facts please. This is ludicrous.

MDP finished first in the Plate aka "Losers tournament". The Cup comprised the top 10 teams. The details of standings are available with Bombay Gym
