Comments of the week: The philosophy and the maths of LawBiz + games lawyers play

If you have missed vicious, inciteful and bad bad journalism, Legally India again brings to you four best comments of the week. These promise to tickle your I-don't-find-this-funny bone as always!

Comment of the week: Today let's revisit an age-old school-assembly line lesson: Stop comparing, start living it!

From the frontlines: Of law school pay packages, the economy and campus recruitment wars
@ Kian - just an observation on 27 July at 14:24

"maybe the myth of law as a career path rivalling the IITs and IIMs is catching up with reality"

So despite the fact that the "average" law grad from a top 5 law school earns more than an "average" IITian, and the top grads of top 3 lawschools earn similar grad salaries as the top 3 IIMs (on average), law as a career path rivalling IIT and IIM is a "myth"?

It may become a myth - time will tell. But the language couches it as if it was always a myth!

To law students:
Don't get into law because its a comparable career path. Law is a jealous mistress, which means it will take over your life.Without genuine interest, one cannot suceed in law - and if that is the case, one is bound to shift to alternate careers.

But the ones with law in their blood will end up earning much more than what "initial salaries" indicate. For this variety of law grads, after 10 years in law, you can easily make a crore a year (regardless of whether you practice in courts or at a law firm). Also, the average lawyer with 2 years of experience have a lot of options. Just don't compare - join law if you want to be a lawyer.

Smokin Joe on 28 July at 00:02

Dear Readers,
I am 7 years in to the system. I am a product of those Harvards of the east. I have been there, done that. Though, I will still consider myself a novice in this industry.

I work with the most reputed brand on this planet, and humbly submit that I have been associated with the best and largest in India. I say this with panache, that the market is only going to improve.

As to the salaries, just a quick compare - the IIMs churn out about 2-2500 of their like. The IITs churn out 7-8000 of their like. The 'best lawyers' produced by the law schools (lets not get into the debate) produce a measly 200 (even if you pick the best of them all).

Given the demand supply equation, where do you see the salaries go? IIMs will find it difficult to match. Mark my words.

So I say this with utmost conviction, that what ever the political environment in India; things are going to only get better. Young guns, aim higher we are at the end of a relatively (wont call it dark - it ain't that dark) dark tunnel.

God bless!

 3. Loyalty is a two-way street, yes?

JSA SA Srishti Ojha joins Desai & Diwanji as second cap markets partner

loyal […] on 24 July at 13:13

Why should loyalty be so prized?

Most firms have little sense of loyalty towards their retainers, why should retainers slavishly follow the law firms and stick around year after year […]?

If you can, explore the market and opportunities and take the best you can from each place.

Honourable mention: I see the games you play, And the traps you lay,  Not fit to fall in, But I let you play them anyway...? *Chorus*

The final word on law school rankings and how they should matter
by  A on 27 July at 15:17

Wow. You really don't get it, do you Kian? The whole law school ranking debate is meant to be a juvenile game. We don't need you to warn us 'not to take it too seriously'. We don't take it seriously anyway.

It's a my member is longer than yours thing- it's an immature way to assert supremacy. Everyone gets that size isn't everything, especially considering we're all indian. Everyone gets that technique and forced arranged marriages make up for it. But that doesn't stop any two guys from making the same assertion.

Basically, it's a game. And it's with articles like these that we start thinking that we have a problem on our hands- and that someone needs to step in and do something about it.
