Stetson South sees NLS Bangalore, Bhopal race to top mooting league

Print

legally-india-mooting-premier-leagueKerala Law Academy won the Stetson South India Rounds last weekend, qualifying for Florida's Stetson World Finals in March 2010 alongside runners-up New Law College Pune.

The Kerala Law Academy Thiruvananthapuram team of Deepa A, Janapriya D and Parvathy. S.S. came out on top of 16 teams from across South India at Bangalore's  Bishop Cotton Women's Christian Law College.

This puts Kerala Law Academy in seventh rank with 10 points in Legally India's Mooting Premier League.

The moot problem concerned marine mammals and ocean noise.

A team from New Law College Bharati Vidyapeeth University Pune, consisting of Avinash Kumar, Bharat Maheswari and Nimit Mathur came in second place, scoring 7 points in the Mooting Premier League.

Bishop Cotton moot court association faculty-in-charge Koeli Mandal said that the Kerala team triumphed after a tough competition.

NLIU Bhopal's team of Ankur Khandelwal, Chetan Kanungo and Anurag Solanki was ranked fourth overall in the Stetson South India rounds but bagged the best memorial prize.

Lalu John Philip of NLSIU Bangalore won in the best student advocate category.

The results mean 7 points for both NLSIU Bangalore and NLIU Bhopal, which are drawing ahead of the chasing pack, with Bhopal nipping at NLSIU Bangalore's heels.

NLSIU scored highly in two categories in the tier 1 Manfred Lachs Space Moot last month. NLIU Bhopal performed strongly in two tier 4 moots.

The team from Nalsar Hyderabad ranked overall third in Stetson's South India Rounds.

The Stetson North India Rounds will be held next week, with two more spots for the Stetson World Finals at stake, as well as 31 more points in the Mooting Premier League.

I think Kian, this is the best thing to happen to LI (i.e. Mooting Premier League), this would definitely generate a lot of interest in law school students. I just hope you guys continue to update it regularly and not go LST's Mootopia's way, which was a big flop.

what about the recently concluded Surana Trial Advocacy Moot and the Tankha Moot and also some tax law moot in Allahabad. Is LI looking into that too.

[Yes, we are looking into both of these - see the italic text above. We have the majority of the information but are just double-checking the last few details on those moots so we can be as accurate as possible. Please bear with us. -Ed]

@6, 7, thank you both for your infectious enthusiasm and impatience!

To keep you in the loop, we'll be foreseeably updating with Stetson North results after they are held this weekend, plus we have now confirmed the Thanka results from a while back, which we will also include.

We have also made some minor changes to the scoring criteria, which we'll explain in (hopefully) Monday's story.

After Stetson North there'll be a bit of a hiatus, I believe - what should we do then? Anyone up for blogging a little about their mooting experiences?

Kian

@9 Thanks - we do know about Surana & Surana Trial moot but in light of feedback we will change its position in the criteria. Will let you know details on Monday.

Raja Ram Tax Moot I don't think is included at the moment, although we may do a round-up of smaller moots at some point. However, the problem is that not all law schools participate in the smaller moots so it would not be as fair awarding points on those in the main list.

@10 If you think a moot should be included that is not on our scoring criteria list ( http://www.legallyindia.com/in...mpetitions ) then please list it and argue (moot) the point on why it should be in tier 4 or higher when compared against the other moots on the list.

We are happy to listen to feedback and adjust the system if this should be necessary but only after some debate and research on the subject.
