Amity tops IICLAM moot; Bhopal targets pole position (CORRECTION)

Mooting

gavel_thAmity Law School IP University Delhi has made a strong start in Legally India's new Mooting Premier League, winning the International Infrastructure and Construction Law Arbitration (IICLAM) at NLU Delhi after beating Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) Gandhinagar this weekend.
The members of Amity IP's winning team were Shaunak Kashyap and Jyotika Jain, with Shaunak Kashyap also bagging the best orator and a full scholarship for his LLM at the National University of Singapore (NUS).

Jain said that the problem concerned areas of law where no Indian precedent existed. The team had to apply common law to find what could constitute a "pathological" clause - in this case, an arbitration clause that was "so defective that it was void for uncertainty", she explained.

Nalsar Hyderabad won the best memorial prize at the IICLAM moot, which is now in its third year and is hosted by NLU Delhi.

The GNLU runner-up team was represented by Roshni Sinha, Oindrila Bhowmick and Nikita Jhunjhunwala.

NLU Delhi moot court committee member Devna Arora said: "12 teams including a Malaysian team were selected for the oral rounds on the basis of written memorial submissions."

The moot problem was 62 pages pages long, which is comparable in length to moot problems of Tier 1 moots such as Philip C. Jessups and Wllliam C. Vis.

"This was one of the most complicated problems I have seen," noted Arora.

With its victory at IICLAM, Amity IP enters Legally India's new Mooting Premier League in fifth place, just behind Nalsar.

School of Excellence Chennai cleaned up at the Henry Dunant Indian Rounds in New Delhi, taking it into third place in the league table.

School of Excellence won best team and best orator at the national rounds, beating Nalsar in the finals.

Law Centre 1 (LC-1) Delhi University bagged the best memorial and Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law won the best researcher award.

Last month, NLIU Bhopal performed a clean sweep on Nalsar Hyderabad turf at the B.R. Sawney Moot Court Competition, beating NLU Jodhpur in the finals. However, NLU Jodhpur won the best memorial prize. [Correction 3 March 2010: We had originally erroneously reported that NLIU Bhopal also won the best memorial prize. After this was pointed out to us we have now investigated and confirmed that this was incorrect and that NLU Jodhpur had won the prize. We have not updated the below table for consistency, although the most recent coverage now reflects this change.]

With these wins NLIU Bhopal is now joint second and is closing in on NLS Bangalore, which is placed in the top spot after winning 32 points at the world finals of the Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot in October.

This is actualy Amity Law School, IP University, New Delhi, its just that their campus is in NOIDA due to some land issues on their Delhi property

[Apologies for the error and thank you for pointing out, we have now corrected this. The earlier version of the article erroneously stated that Amity Law School Noida had won this competition. -Ed]

Hi. An interesting name you have chosen for the ranking procedure. MPL. But does that also mean that you will be following their methodology as well? i.e. The teams which finish last will be relegated and not eligible for the next edition of MPL, provided this table is not perpetual in nature. I guess not. Because even if one does relegate them, in practice they will still be competing for the top honors every year.

Hi Drew Peacock. This is Ishan. A senseless observation to say the least which does nothing to contribute to the discussion!
