NUJS, NLIU Bhopal enter moot rankings behind NLS Bangalore

Mooting

gavel_thNUJS Kolkata has scored a double-whammy by winning the best team and best researcher awards at the first All India Corporate Law Moot Court Competition 2009 organised by National Law University Delhi, narrowly beating NLIU Bhopal, which bagged the best orator award.
The performance places NUJS in second place in this year's mooting season league table, after NLSIU Bangalore, which won the international Manfred Lachs Space moot in October.

The speakers of the winning team were NUJS Kolkata students Shaswata Datta and Abhyuday Agarwal, with Gitanjali Shankar acting as the team's researcher and winning the best researcher prize.

They won against NLIU Bhopal in a moot final on the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) takeover code, insider trading and the Companies Act.

Against the backdrop of SEBI making a number of changes to the takeover code, the moot served as a good platform for the law students to brush up their knowledge of the law.

Datta said: "The problem was excellently framed and captured the latest controversy surrounding the takeover code. I think the moot was marked by its excellent judging standards.

"And one has to give full credit to the organisers of this moot, it did not seem it was their first moot."

NLSIU Bangalore co-speaker added: "It was a great experience and a challenge as we had to argue on practical application of commercial laws in court."

1st All India Corporate Law Moot Court Competition -2009 organized by National Law University, Delhi finally concluded on November 8 with the students of NUJS becoming the winner s of the Competition. Professor Anju Vali Tikoo was the convenor of the competition and said: "The competition saw participation from the best law schools of the country in which NUJS triumphed."

She also commended the efforts of the team from NLIU Bhopal, which gave a tough fight as the runners up with student Bishen Jeswant picking up the best orator award.

The event, which concluded on Monday (November 8), was co-sponsored and co-organised by UKCA Law chambers, New Delhi.

Next week, there are two major competitions up on line. The south Indian qualifying rounds of Stetson and International Infrastructure and Construction Law Arbitration Moot Court Competition is at stake.

I had met Datta at GLC, Mumbai where Datta had mooted previously.

Datta is probably amongst the better known mooters from India - apart from NLU Delhi (now) and obviously NUJS, Kolkata he has a huge fan following in Mumbai as well. I guess Bangalore and NLS (??) must be his next target. Many Congratulations to Abhyuday and Gitanjali as well (who had also incidentally come to Mumbai to moot).

There have been comments mentioned above, but the rankings have not been updated/altered, so I'm added another comment for good measure:
The following recent acheivements of NLIU should be taken into account:
1)Winner,B.R.Sawney NALSAR moot court competition
2)Best Speaker,B.R.Sawney NALSAR moot court competition
3)Best Memorial, B.R.Sawney NALSAR moot court competition
4)Best Memorial, South India Rounds, Stentson international Moot court Competition.
5)Best Memorial, UNHRC Moot, Madras University

I don't think the points system accounts for the following 2 acheivements, however I'm adding them anyway:

6) 4th Best Team , South India rounds of Stetson
7) 2nd Best Memorial, GLC, Eranakulam Moot

ALL THESE COMPETITIONS HAVE BEEN WITH THE LAST MONTH.

Besides losing to Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Patiala, Punjab, what has NALSAR been upto this year? Very disconcerting to see it nowhere on the league table.

It's become a regular feature of legallyindia to see Kian come up with remarks such as "Thanks. We will update it shortly." or "Sorry, we didn't know about that". Should seriously consider getting someone who apprises themselves of information from the entire spectrum or pyramid rather than a select part of it. This thread or any other thread for that matter is ample proof of that. Either give the entire news or put up a disclaimer.

Dear Drew P, many thanks for your constructive comment, as ever.

There was in fact a disclaimer that this is still a work-in-progress.

However, we are working hard on shaping this into something that most people can agree with and we will need community input in getting a good system together.

Please also bear with us as sometimes it can take a little while to authoritatively confirm all the results and details of the moots.

All help mooters can give will be much appreciated, as always.

Best regards,
Kian

Some of the posts which are coming in are just ridiculous. I'm referring to the posts which say the NLIU has only infrastructure but no talent, another one which says that NLSIU is the best and further another which says NALSAR is better than NLIU. All the people, i.e [#5] and other students of NLS and NALSAR, who have been sending in such posts, I have to say that your are letting your college down by making such petty and apprently frustrated comments on a public forum. Also, it shows insecurity on your part, that you have bring down other Universities in public to make yourself look good.
May I also remind such people that this is a truly novel concept introduced by Legally India to have a Mooting Premier League and so please don't use this forum to wash your dirty linen (which is not even really dirty). If you have constructive contributions regarding mooting please make them.
Mature posts such as the one sent in by "NUJS Grad" are encouraged.
The moderator too must make sure that such obnoxious posts are regulated.

Now look at that, okay now here we are lets look above at this whole "debate"(though the Sh** above doesn qualify to this solemn word)seeing in a larger prespective, we hv the oh so budding lawyers from the NLIU S nd NUJS S nd the Nalsars,,,etc etc etc fighting it out trying to outshine each other in proving who has a more glorious history, which college reproduces better speakers orators mooters and so on.But respected all do you even realise that in the so called national law schools which you study nd are trained profusely to orate moot win and than boast, but not even five percent 5% of you will become LAWYERS or ADVOCATES,,,shocked ....y?...5yr s nd hellota money nd we wont be Advocates,,,,?/...Yeah its damn true, cuz you are nt been trained to be lawyers or advoctes but a product of huge machines mechanically producing HIGHLY PAID CLERKS. Because do not scribble with pen in Air condition rooms they fight it out with words in court rooms. As is your ultimate dream of lavish packages ,furnished firms or entry in prestiguous corporates is not making you a lawyer but ofcurse highly paid clerks, this proffession was not for those who hv knowledge of law,,even common is expected to know law, rmeber IGNORANCE OF LAW IS NO EXCUSE..proffession was for good orators who can put across words and present the common man in courts.SO WHY THE HELL YOU FIGHT MOOT COURTS WIN THEM TAKE HOME TROPHIES WEN AFTER PASSING OUT VERY FEW WIL DO LITIGATION.9 TO 9 schedules in your colleges are to train you for 5 yrs to become habitual to 9 to 9 corporate life...............NW some Smart A** here will tag me as a frustrated vernaculous ghati ,from a below avg college, but ahmm i graduated from university of delhi law faculty campus law centre, still most prestigious law college ever in India of the only university from our country to be recognised wrold over, and i was swtudent of a 5yr national law college like you all which i quit cuz they were not making me a lawyer but forcing me to run in a rat race, the frustration of which is displayed inevtibly in messages above...I like love respect all your college but wake to what LAW is all about and before these firms and corporates suck the youth out of you and leave you thinking if i had worked this much this long for myself i would hv been some thing else,,,stop running nw nd think........thnk u

@Lawyer

brother u should not force ur opinion on others........ it depends on the circumstances..... whether one choses litigation or joins a firm..... I will make myself clearer......

Let us compare the expenditures of Faculty Of Law Delhi University And a National Law University

Expenditure a 3 year degree in Law from Faculty Of Law Delhi University and graduation expenses.........

The fee at Faculty Of Law Delhi University is 3510 Rs per annum…………….(1)
AND
Supposing the fee for a 3 year Graduation and including other expenses Is 1lac Rs per annum (2)
(1)+(2) = 3510 for 3 years + 1 lac for 3 years each
= 10 030 + 3lacs
= 3.11 lacs
Assuming the cost of a laptop and some other extra expenses a further 89, 000Rs is added…..
Hence Total cost of becoming a lawyer who has passed out from Faculty Of Law Delhi University
Is = 4 lac Rs…..
FOR A STUDENT WHO HAS TAKEN A LOAN IT BECOMES 5 LAC RS………..

Now Lets see the expenditure of becoming a lawyer from a National Law University…..
Taking the fee structure Of NLIU Bhopal,
1st Year fee = 1, 82, 000 Rs
Subsequent Years = 1, 62, 00 Rs
Total fee for 5 years = 8.3 lacs
Extra Expenses make it 9.2 lacs……….
9.2 lacs is the cost……..

FOR A STUDENT WHO HAS TAKEN A LOAN IT BECOMES 11 LACS……...

Now, the question arises from where one can repay the loan………???

Now, even a lawyer like Ram Jethmalani would not hav got 11lacs as his 1st fee…. Also to go into litigation one has to have a lot of contacts in the legal fraternity……… not everyone is so resourceful

Also when the bank will press for the repayment of the loan …….Certainly u wont come to their rescue……..

To have a good job is the best security they can have………

@lawyer , boss u hv put frwrded the most rational arguments thn others, rest are aencdotle in nature nd need no reply....i totally appreciate ur explanation on need to repay loan nd financial diff, my point of debate remains confined to wts the essence of law as a proffession wt is an advocate??.....if neone wants to keep it constrained to take a loan -get a job pay it baCK,,,ALONG WID CREDIT CARD DEPENDANT LIFE,,,thn its a free world,,,i am jus expressing, discussing point of views here not,,,forcing opinions, also the reason for low fee structure of law faculty D.U in comparison to national law school can be attributed to the fact tht d.u is a central univ all state nd central aided nd funded univ hv this benefit of low fee structure as most of expenses are born by govt in runing it
