Today's news. Just wondering why the SC can't intervene and stop such wasteful spending?
At PM's Mega Karnataka Campaign Speech, Message To End "Revdi Culture" ========================================================================
For Karnataka polls, Congress has announced 'guarantees' that include 200 units of free power to all households, 10 kg of rice free to every member of BPL household (Anna Bhagya), βΉ 2,000 monthly assistance to woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), and βΉ 3,000 every month for graduate youth and βΉ 1,500 for diploma holders (both in the age group of 18-25) for two years, on coming to power.
The Prime Minister said states are getting immersed in debt because of freebies, and emphasised that the country and the governments cannot be run like this.
UBI is NOT the same as giving freebies, man. These freebies are a cheap election gimmick that destroys the long-term capital expenditure ability of states in return for votes from poor and illiterate people who form a bulk of our population. And the Congress has always engaged in this form of vote-bank politics, much more than the BJP, especially considering they ruled for over 50 years post-Independence. A lot of the high GDP growth that India witnessed during the UPA era was because of sustained capital investments that happened in the previous NDA-Vajpayee era. But ignorant people credit the Congress for this.
UBI on the other hand, by literal definition, does not discriminate between citizens rich or poor. It's not an election gimmick and is given in advanced nations based on a systematic assessment of the state's financial ability. Why don't you read up on some basic micro and macro-economics if you want to have opinions on this? It's not that hard to understand.
And for the record, since the Mod loves to attach political and ideological labels on everyone, I'm neither right nor left-wing. But Modi is definitely correct on this even though it's hypocritical to some degree since BJP is not much better. But still, I would rather have them than INC just for the fact that they are not as disingenuous about their politics as the Italian and her gang.
Who told you it is becoming popular? Are you so stupid moderator? How can anyone with basic financial sense endorse, or rather agree with the concept of Universal income? Even Amartya Sen has agreed that UBI cannot be applicable to a country like India, our economy simply cannot handle the budget of this horrendous venture. It's mostly impractical.
The central government currently offers the highest amount of subsidies and welfare spending compared to any state government in the country, so this is just another political stunt by Modi that is hypocritical in nature.
Rich people complaining about poor people's lives being improved (in tangible and provable ways) because it goes against their iNteLlEctUaL pRinCiPleS is so funny (but sad)

Even the left is disagreeing with it, after Biden did something similar in his covid plan, that proved highly disastrous (https://sp2.upenn.edu/press/bidens-stimulus-plan-contains-an-experiment-in-universal-basic-income/).
