With the kind of inequalities we have, I think educational institutes should extract sums of money from the ones who have the ability and desire to pay, and use it to subsidise education for the financially weaker. Not bootlicking at all, obviously the scholarship needs changes, but yes extract more from the ones who benefit greatly from this inequality.

Shouldn't we instead strive for keeping education as affordable as possible. And the argument -"they have scholarships for poor kids so no issues", has zero correlation with charging such humongous figures.

Older readers of LI will remember that a bunch of NLUs (led by NUJS) had started a commendable #NationaliseNLUs movement many years ago. It led to a bill by TMC MP and Harvard professor Sugata Bose (drafted by an NLU intern) much before Meenakshi Lekhi's bill. The issue was also raised in Parliament by many MPs, including Maneka Gandhi. LI had covered all of this extensively, back in the day when Kian was into serious journalism and LI was a respected website.

Sadly, the movement ended after the last members of of Gen Y graduated and Gen Z took over. The present lot is too busy fighting woke culture wars and too complacent with their inflated grades. No one cares about the betterment of NLUs.

The funding from Karnataka Govt is in limbo till NLS implements the 25% domicile quota. The Govt has threatened to stop funding as well.

Exactly. IISc (just across the town) got 450 crore funding for a single center in their upcoming medical school (which itself has got another ~1000 crores). Of course, this is the IISc we are talking of - it is a different league. IITs and AIIMS' pale in comparison.

Such an irony that its a tight slap to other NLUs and their loudmouth students on LI who are claiming that they are national institutions and not state institutions because apparently "state government of Karnataka gave 24 crores to NLSIU".

Although I wasn't able to find the source of the news, if it is true, it is among the highest budgets allocated.

I've researched about the budgets of different NLUs and surprisingly found some institutions being very open about it, while others being excessively secretive about it.
Here are some findings:

NLUD 2022 (10.5 crores- Revised ;14 crores- Estimated) (Most well-maintained records)

NLUJ 2020 (0.5 crore)

NLIU 2022 (28.5 crores- Total Receipts)

HNLU 2021 (13 crore)

NLUO 2020 (0.4972438 crore)

TNNLU 2020 (13.8 crores- Total Receipts Estimate)

RGNUL 2022 (wasn't able to find govt. funds exclusively, they're included in the net revenue receipts) (23.03 crores- Net revenue receipts)

I wasn't able to find any data for GNLU and RMNLU. And I've noticed a sharp decline in the data after COVID; budgets after 2020 were hard to find.

To be honest, the funds from the government are not the sole representation of its economic strength. The fee, batch sizes, number of programmes offered, and allocation of funds also play a major role; some NLUs also rely on interest from fixed deposits. Some NLUs are hugely in surplus, while others are in deficit.

Yes, a tight slap to other NLUs and their loudmouth students on LI who are claiming that they are national institutions and not state institutions. This vindicates the argument made by Sudhir and alumni, as well as ASG Vikramjit Banerjee in court, and UPHELD by the Karnataka High Court.

Please also note:

1. NLSIU has NOT accepted the state government’s argument that it is a state institution. The matter is now pending before the SC and there is every reason why the SC will uphold the Karnataka HC decision. Also, at present, the Karnataka HC decision is the current law.

2. There are other NLUs with the CJI as Chancellor, but they are still state institutions and have the name of the state in the NLU to make it clear, eg WBNUJS and GNLU.

3. Meenakshi Lekhi did not move forward with her private bill on so-called NLU nationalisation after the Karnataka HC judgement, which suggests that she too has accepted the judgement.
